Which Wall Wrap or Sarking: A Buyer Guide to the Membranes We Stock

27 September 2026

Three questions pick the product: wall or roof, barrier or breather, and whether the membrane has to shed water on its own. That third one is the filter most people miss, and it rules four of our wraps out from behind direct fixed cladding. The table below puts the 27 Bradford, Ametalin, Proctor Group, Fletcher and Kingspan membranes we stock side by side.

In short

  • Wall or roof is the first filter, and most of what we carry is wall only. Enviroseal Tuff, VapourTech RWC, both FireSark grades and the Thermoseal and Trade Select sarkings are documented for a roof.
  • Four are Non-Water Barrier: Thermoseal Wall Breather Class 4, Trade Select Wall Wrap Micro-perforated, Wall Wrap xR Micro-perforated HD and FireSark Micro-perforated. Each needs a masonry leaf or a cavity.
  • Bradford publish a vapour class and no permeance figure, Ametalin publish a number, so the two cannot be compared on permeance.
  • Reflective on both faces and vapour permeable in one sheet is Trade Select Wall Wrap xR Micro-perforated HD, Class 4 at 1.450 µg/N.s, category RR.
  • The widest rolls are 3050 mm, in VapourTech Wall and Brane VHP, then 3000 mm in Enviroseal RW, RW Plus and ProctorWrap RW.

Three questions that pick the product

Datasheets are written one product at a time, so nobody lays the range out in one view. For the reasoning behind the classes, read vapour permeable membrane or traditional sarking.

Wall, roof, or both. Bradford state on the Enviroseal Plus and CW statements that neither is intended as roof sarking, and Tuff is the only Bradford breather classified for both. Ametalin split it by name, Sarking for roofs and Wall Wrap for walls, with VapourTech RWC crossing over.

Class. The Bradford Class 2 wraps and roof sarkings are suitable where a vapour barrier is specified, NCC 2022 Climate Zones 1 to 3, and not where a permeable membrane is called for in Zones 4 to 8. Resiwrap is tighter at Class 1.

Does it shed water by itself. A Non-Water Barrier membrane is not a weather layer. It relies on the brick leaf or a drained cavity, and behind direct fixed cladding nothing sits between the wet side and the frame.

Two cautions on reading across brands. Bradford give a class and nothing else, so a Bradford Class 4 could sit anywhere above the threshold. And the Duty column is not like for like: Bradford publish the minimum, Ametalin the measured result against it.

Permishield XV 70 sits outside the pattern: a 7.2 mm foam core rather than a laminate, so AS/NZS 4200.1 duty does not apply, and the only sheet here with a material R-value of its own, R0.20 m2K/W at 23 °C, the thermal break figure the code asks for. Its faces read 0.03 and 0.12, one reflective and one semi-reflective. A fully reflective second face earns only what the declared build up says: on an unventilated roof at 22 degree pitch Sarking HD declares RT 0.93 winter against Sarking xR HD at RT 1.14.

Walls: matching the wrap to the cladding

Direct fixed cladding, no cavity. The membrane is the weather layer, so it must be classified Water Barrier. That admits Enviroseal RW, RW Plus and CW, ProctorWrap CW, VapourTech Wall, Brane VHP, AIR-CELL Permishield XV 70 and the Class 2 foil wraps, and excludes all four Non-Water Barrier products. Bradford add that where direct fix cladding or its profile reduces drainage and drying, they recommend a cavity anyway.

Brick veneer or a drained cavity. The brick leaf handles the rain, so a perforated wrap will do. Wall Wrap xR Micro-perforated HD is built for it: Class 4 at 1.450 µg/N.s, Heavy duty, 15.3 kN/m tensile against a 12.5 minimum, one size at 1350 mm x 30 m. Thermoseal Wall Breather Class 4 belongs here too, the only membrane Bradford classify Non-Air Barrier.

Bradford give CW and Enviroseal Plus the same Light Wall duty, the same 200 N burst and 45 N edge tear minima and the same Climate Zones 2 to 8 at 600 mm support centres, so calling CW the tougher commercial grade overstates it. Bradford allow 6 weeks before cladding on CW while the older CW datasheet asks for an inspection after 8 weeks of UV. Plan for the 6, not the 12 Bradford give Enviroseal Plus.

Roofs: tile, metal and commercial

A roof membrane has to span between battens without support, and hang so water runs off rather than sitting on it.

Product Roof type Duty Span and support Sag Exposure before cover
Bradford Enviroseal Tuff Tile or metal, permeable Medium Mesh or rigid sheeting, or unsupported to 900 mm on tile, 1200 mm on metal Up to 40 mm 2 weeks roof, 12 wall
Thermoseal Tile Roof Sarking Concrete or terracotta tile Heavy Mesh or rigid sheeting, or unsupported to 600 mm Up to 40 mm 2 weeks roof, 6 wall
Thermoseal Metal Roof and Wall Sarking Metal roof and wall Light Not stated 40 mm between each batten 2 weeks roof, 6 wall
Bradford Thermoseal Wall Wrap Not under tiles, metal possible Medium Only where duty and condensation risk permit 40 mm between each batten 2 weeks roof, 6 wall
Trade Select Sarking TRE Tile, and all roofs per Ametalin Extra Heavy Not stated Slight sag to the gutter Not stated
VapourTech RWC Commercial, permeable Medium Printed face out, laps down the slope Not stated UV Pass, keeps 85% of tensile

Tile. Sarking TRE is the strongest ordinary membrane we hold: 0.22 mm, 23.7 kN/m tensile against a 13.0 minimum and 1040 N edge tear against 90, because battens are fixed through it. Thermoseal Tile Roof Sarking is the Heavy duty alternative.

Metal. Thermoseal Metal Roof and Wall Sarking is the lightest duty roof sarking Bradford make. Where the roof has to dry upward, Enviroseal Tuff is the permeable answer at a 1200 mm unsupported span, and condensation in metal roofs explains why.

Commercial. VapourTech RWC is the thickest Ametalin membrane we stock at 0.83 mm, Class 4 at 2.144 µg/N.s with 512 N edge tear against a 45 minimum. The only other Ametalin permeable membrane at Medium duty is Wall Wrap Micro-perforated MD, a wall product. None of these is a working platform: safety mesh carries a person, and the mesh requirements are separate.

The non-combustible options

Two products answer a non-combustible specification rather than merely survive one. Trade Select FireSark is E-glass fabric bonded to aluminium foil, both components Not Deemed Combustible to AS 1530.1, flammability index 1, early fire hazard indices 0, 0, 0 and 2. FireSark Micro-perforated is the same build opened up, Class 3 permeable at 0.8698 µg/N.s and still within the Deemed-to-Satisfy provisions, and being a Non-Water Barrier it wants a drained cavity.

Ametalin claim the same concession for Sarking HD, which covers sarking-type materials no thicker than 1 mm with a flammability index of 5 or less, and this one is 0.12 mm and Low. Do not extend it to Sarking xR HD, which is 0.17 mm and carries no such statement. For the indices and Group numbers, see fire performance in insulation.

When the membrane is the finish

In a carpark soffit, a plant room or an exposed ceiling the membrane is what people look at, and none of the wraps above are meant for that. Bradford Thermoplast Decorative Sarking is the answer, Medium duty and Class 2, in three variants at 1350 mm x 60 m. The perforated ones are acoustically transparent, and the plain one carries the water and vapour barrier.

The Group Number is where people go wrong. On its own, Thermoplast 993F White has no Group Number and Bradford say it is not suitable as an exposed internal lining. Faced to a Bradford Glasswool Building Blanket in the systems listed in PTS102_I it does carry one: Group 1 with R1.0 50 mm through R2.3 100 mm blanket, Group 2 with R2.5 100 mm through R4.2 175 mm, SMOGRARC above 100 either way. The Group Number belongs to the system, not the roll.

What our documents cannot tell you

  • ProctorWrap RW and Sisalation Vapawrap carry no technical data. No class, no permeance, no duty, no water or air classification, and we will not guess. Ask and we will chase the sheet.
  • Enviroseal RW has no statement of its own in our files. The PDF on the RW page is the Enviroseal Plus statement PTS143_J, whose code table covers only the four Plus codes. We have used it as a guide and asked Bradford for the RW document.
  • The Thermoplast statement covers a code we do not sell. PTS102_I lists 183007, while our three variants are 188901, 123643 and 131712. It never uses the word perforated, so read its water and air rows as the plain sheet.
  • ProctorWrap CW and Enviroseal CW look like one product. The PDF on our ProctorWrap CW page is the Bradford Enviroseal CW datasheet, with the identical codes 114175 and 134863 at the same 1500 mm x 50 m.
  • Sizes drift between our pages and the attached documents. The 3050 mm VapourTech Wall roll is on our page but not in its sheet, which lists 1500 mm x 30 m only. The Enviroseal Tuff page also sells Enviroseal HTS, a separate product.

We supply it and we install it

AWBM stocks wall wrap and sarking membranes from Bradford, Ametalin Trade Select, Proctor Group, Fletcher, Kingspan and Rhino. The 27 in the table come from the first five, in widths from 1200 mm to 3050 mm. Wall wrap and sarking are work we install as well as supply. Send the cladding type, the roof type and the class specified, and we will say which roll to order and how many. Delivery in Victoria and New South Wales is $55 in metro Melbourne and metro Sydney, $99 in the outer suburbs and $149 anywhere else, set by postcode.

Frequently asked questions

Which wall wrap or sarking should I buy?

Work three filters: wall or roof, then the vapour class your specification or climate zone calls for, then whether the membrane has to shed water by itself. That last one rules the four Non-Water Barrier products out from behind direct fixed cladding.

Can I use wall wrap as roof sarking?

Usually not. Bradford state that Enviroseal Plus and CW are not intended as roof sarking, and Thermoseal Wall Wrap is not recommended under tiles. Enviroseal Tuff is the Bradford breather rated for both, at unsupported spans to 900 mm on tile and 1200 mm on metal.

Which reflective vapour permeable membrane do you stock?

Trade Select Wall Wrap xR Micro-perforated HD, Class 4 at 1.450 µg/N.s at Heavy duty with both faces IR reflective, and FireSark Micro-perforated, Class 3 at 0.8698 µg/N.s and non-combustible. Both are Non-Water Barrier, so both want a drained cavity or a masonry leaf.

Which wall wrap can go behind direct fixed cladding?

Any classified Water Barrier: Enviroseal RW, RW Plus and CW, ProctorWrap CW, VapourTech Wall and Brane VHP, AIR-CELL Permishield XV 70 and the Class 2 foil wraps. Bradford add that where direct fix cladding reduces drainage and drying, they recommend a cavity anyway.

What is the widest wall wrap roll you sell?

3050 mm, in Trade Select VapourTech Wall and Brane VHP, each 3050 mm x 30 m covering 91.5 m2. Next are Bradford Enviroseal RW and RW Plus at 3000 mm x 25 m and ProctorWrap RW at 3000 mm x 30 m.

Which sarking suits a tile roof and which suits a metal roof?

For tile, Trade Select Sarking TRE is the specialist at Extra Heavy duty with 1040 N edge tear, and Bradford Thermoseal Tile Roof Sarking the Heavy duty alternative at a 600 mm unsupported span. For metal, Thermoseal Metal Roof and Wall Sarking is the Light duty option and Enviroseal Tuff the permeable one.

Do you publish a vapour permeance figure for the Bradford wall wraps?

No, because Bradford do not. Every current Bradford Product Technical Statement we hold gives the class only, 1, 2 or 4. The one number we hold is greater than 1.1403 µg/N.s, from the superseded Enviroseal CW datasheet of 29 November 2019.

Where can I buy sarking and wall wrap, and do you deliver?

All 27 in the table are on the AWBM site, along with the Rhino range, most of them in the wall wrap, roof sarking and building membrane collections. Trade Select FireSark, AIR-CELL Permishield XV 70 and Sisalation Vapawrap sit outside those three, so reach them from the table above. Delivery is Victoria and New South Wales only: $55 in metro Melbourne and metro Sydney, $99 in the outer suburbs and $149 beyond that, set by postcode.
