Trade Select Wall Wrap is a single sided reflective wall wrap from Ametalin, stocked in Light Duty and Medium Duty, each in 1350 mm and 1500 mm widths and 30 m or 60 m rolls. It is a Class 2 vapour barrier, so it holds moisture out of the frame rather than letting it pass through.

Barrier wrap or breather wrap

This is the barrier version. It is an air barrier, a water barrier and a Class 2 vapour barrier at the same time, which suits Climate Zones 1 to 5 and any wall where the design intent is to keep vapour on the outside. If the wall needs to dry outward, the vapour permeable version is the Wall Wrap Micro-perforated instead. Getting that choice wrong is the single most common condensation problem in a new wall, so check the climate zone before ordering.

Light Duty or Medium Duty

Both grades carry the same barrier classifications. The difference is strength while the frame stands exposed. Light Duty is tested at 8.9 kN/m machine direction against a 7.5 kN/m minimum. Medium Duty runs 11.8 kN/m against a 9.5 kN/m minimum, and its edge tear is 500 N against 375 N. On a windy site, a long build program, or a frame other trades will be working past, Medium Duty is the one that survives.

The foil side needs an air gap

Foil emittance is 0.03 and the printed face is 0.90. That 97% reflective face only earns its R-value when it faces a cavity, so a wrap pressed flat against cladding gives you the barrier performance and none of the reflective gain. Ametalin declare a total system R-value of 1.01 winter and 0.92 summer for lightweight cladding direct to stud, and 2.93 winter with an R2.7 batt in a brick veneer wall.

Fire

Flammability index Low, at or below 5, with a Group 1 fire performance classification for wall and ceiling lining. It complies with AS 3959-2018 for use in all Bushfire Attack Levels. Take independent advice on sarking selection before locking in a BAL design.

On site

Lap and tape the joins and seal around penetrations, or the wrap is not a barrier at all. The material is electrically conductive, so keep it clear of wiring. Install to AS 4200.2. Full figures for both duties are in the table below.

Compliance

Standards AS/NZS 4859.1:2018 and AS/NZS 4200.1:2017
NCC Meets NCC requirements for insulation, pliable building membranes and sarking-type materials

Fitting notes

Install to AS 4200.2 Pliable Building Membranes and Underlays, Part 2. Lap and tape every join and seal around penetrations. Keep the foil face to the cavity so the reflective side can work. The product is electrically conductive, so keep it clear of wiring. Store the rolls undercover in a clean dry place in the pack provided, away from cement, mortar and other alkaline products.

Figures are taken from the Ametalin technical data sheets for Trade Select Wall Wrap LD (TPM-23249-5, product code TSLD) and Trade Select Wall Wrap MD (product code TSMD). The MD document is linked above and the LD document is available on request. Ametalin can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.

Common questions

Is this the breather wrap or the barrier wrap?

It is the barrier. Trade Select Wall Wrap is a Class 2 vapour barrier, permeance 0.0152 µg/N·s in Light Duty and 0.0131 µg/N·s in Medium Duty. The vapour permeable version is Wall Wrap Micro-perforated, which is a Class 4 vapour permeable membrane.

Which climate zones is it for?

Ametalin specify it for wall systems in Climate Zones 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, and it is also suitable under metal roofs in all zones as a sarking.

What is the difference between Light Duty and Medium Duty?

Strength, not barrier performance. Light Duty is 8.9 kN/m machine direction and 375 N edge tear. Medium Duty is 11.8 kN/m and 500 N. Both are the same Class 2 vapour barrier, water barrier and air barrier.

Do I get the reflective R-value if I fix it straight to the stud?

Only partly. The foil face has an emittance of 0.03 but it needs an air cavity in front of it. Ametalin declare RT 1.01 winter for lightweight cladding direct to stud, and RT 2.93 winter for a brick veneer wall with an R2.7 batt.

Can I use it in a bushfire area?

Yes. Flammability index is Low, at or below 5, and it complies with AS 3959-2018 for use in all BALs. Take independent advice on sarking selection before locking in the BAL design.

How much wall does one roll cover?

A 1350 x 30 m roll covers 40.5 m², 1350 x 60 m covers 81 m², 1500 x 30 m covers 45 m² and 1500 x 60 m covers 90 m². Allow for laps and for wastage around openings.

Which width should I order?

1350 mm suits most standard wall heights. The 1500 mm roll gives more overlap on a taller wall or a raked elevation, and the 60 m rolls halve the number of end joins on a long run.

Is it safe around wiring?

No. The foil is electrically conductive. Keep it clear of wiring and follow the electrical safety guidance in the Ametalin data sheet.
