Trade Select Sarking HD is the heavy duty grade of Ametalin's single sided reflective membrane, used as roof sarking and as a wall wrap on jobs that need the extra strength. Five roll sizes, including a 1200 mm width that suits standard rafter spacings.
Where the heavy duty grade earns its money
Tensile strength is 13.9 kN/m machine direction against a 12.5 kN/m minimum, and edge tear is 586 N against an 80 N minimum. Sarking spends its working life stretched over rafters and walked on by roofers, so tear resistance is the property that decides whether the roll survives the day it goes on.
Non-combustible use
Sarking-type materials no thicker than 1 mm with a flammability index of 5 or less can be used where non-combustible material is required. This one is 0.12 mm with a Low flammability index, and Ametalin state it complies with the Deemed-to-Satisfy provisions for non-combustible building elements. It also complies with AS 3959-2018 for all Bushfire Attack Levels.
Vapour barrier, so check the roof design
This is a Class 2 vapour barrier at 0.004 µg/N·s, which is a genuinely tight membrane. Under a metal roof in a cold or mixed climate that can be exactly wrong, because the roof then has no way to dry upward. If the design calls for a permeable underlay, use VapourTech Brane VHP instead. Our article on metal roof condensation sets out the reasoning.
On site
Ametalin declare RT 0.93 winter and RT 1.51 summer for an unventilated 22 degree residential roof, and RT 2.75 winter for battened out lightweight cladding with an R2.7 batt. The foil face needs an air gap to deliver that. The membrane is electrically conductive, so keep it clear of wiring. Install to AS 4200.2. Full figures are in the table below.

Fitting notes
Install to AS 4200.2 Pliable Building Membranes and Underlays, Part 2. Lap and tape the joins and seal around penetrations. Keep the foil face to the cavity so the reflective side can work. The product is electrically conductive, so keep it clear of wiring. Store the rolls undercover in a clean dry place in the pack provided, away from cement, mortar and other alkaline products.

Common questions
Can I use this where the NCC calls for non-combustible material?
Ametalin state that it complies with the Deemed-to-Satisfy provisions for non-combustible building elements. The concession covers sarking-type materials no thicker than 1 mm with a flammability index of 5 or less. This one is 0.12 mm with a Low index.
Is it a breather sarking?
No. It is a Class 2 vapour barrier at 0.004 µg/N·s, one of the tightest membranes in the Trade Select range. If the roof needs to dry upward, specify a vapour permeable underlay such as VapourTech Brane VHP.
Why is there a 1200 mm roll?
It suits sarking runs where 1350 mm is more than the rafter spacing needs, so there is less waste on the lap. The 1350 and 1500 mm widths are the general purpose sizes.
What R-value do I actually get?
On its own, not much. Ametalin declare RT 0.93 winter and RT 1.51 summer for an unventilated 22 degree residential roof. Add an R2.7 batt to battened out lightweight cladding and the declared figure is RT 2.75 winter. The foil needs an air gap in front of it either way.
How does it differ from Sarking xR HD?
Sarking xR HD is double sided reflective, so both faces have a low emittance and the declared roof figure rises to RT 1.14 winter and RT 1.82 summer. Sarking HD is single sided with a printed anti-glare face at 0.90 emittance.
Can roofers walk on it?
Sarking is not a working platform and is not a fall arrest system. It is heavy duty and tear resistant, at 586 N edge tear against an 80 N minimum, but safety mesh is what carries a person.
Is it safe around wiring?
No. The foil is electrically conductive. Keep it clear of wiring and follow the electrical safety guidance in the Ametalin data sheet.
