Trade Select Sarking xR HD is the double sided reflective version of Ametalin's heavy duty sarking. Both faces are low emittance, 0.05 on the anti-glare side and 0.03 on the foil side, which is where the extra R-value in the name comes from.

Two reflective faces, two air gaps

A single sided sarking only works against the cavity it faces. With both faces reflective, a roof that has an air space above and below the membrane gets a contribution from each side. Ametalin declare RT 1.14 winter and RT 1.82 summer for an unventilated 22 degree residential roof, against RT 0.93 and RT 1.51 for the standard Sarking HD. Battened out lightweight cladding with an R2.7 batt is declared at RT 3.00 winter.

Still a heavy duty membrane

Tensile strength 12.8 kN/m machine direction against a 12.5 kN/m minimum, edge tear 507 N against 80 N, nominal thickness 0.17 mm. Class 2 vapour barrier at 0.02141 µg/N·s, water barrier and air barrier.

Fire

Flammability index Low, at or below 5, and compliant with AS 3959-2018 for use in all BALs. Note that at 0.17 mm it is still under the 1 mm limit, but Ametalin do not claim the non-combustible construction concession on this sheet the way they do for Sarking HD, so do not assume it.

On site

Both faces are reflective, so an installation that presses the membrane flat on both sides throws away most of what you paid for. Batten it out or run it over a spacer. It is electrically conductive, so keep it clear of wiring. Install to AS 4200.2. Full figures are in the table below.

Thermal, declared total system R-value

Residential roof, 22 degree pitch, unventilated RT 1.14 winter, RT 1.82 summer
Lightweight cladding battened out plus R2.7 batt RT 3.00 winter, RT 2.89 summer
Emittance Anti-glare side 0.05, foil side 0.03
Emittance classification IR Reflective both faces
Emittance category RR

Calculated to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018 for typical mainland capital city conditions. Each reflective face needs an air cavity in front of it to contribute.

Durability

Dry delamination Pass (AS/NZS 4201.1:1994)
Wet delamination Pass (AS/NZS 4201.2:1994)
Shrinkage, repeated wetting and drying 0.0% (limit under 0.5%)

Compliance

Standards AS/NZS 4859.1:2018 and AS/NZS 4200.1:2017
NCC Meets NCC requirements for pliable building membranes, insulation and sarking-type materials

Fitting notes

Install to AS 4200.2 Pliable Building Membranes and Underlays, Part 2. Both faces are reflective, so leave an air gap on each side wherever the design allows it. Lap and tape the joins and seal around penetrations. The product is electrically conductive, so keep it clear of wiring. Store the rolls undercover in a clean dry place in the pack provided, away from cement, mortar and other alkaline products.

Figures are taken from the Ametalin technical data sheet for Trade Select Sarking xR HD, TPM-23249-3, product code TSHD-XR. The manufacturer document is linked above. Ametalin can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.

Common questions

What does xR mean?

Extra R-value. Both faces are reflective, 0.05 anti-glare side and 0.03 foil side, so the membrane can contribute to the R-value of an air space on either side of it rather than only one.

How much better is it than plain Sarking HD?

On the declared unventilated 22 degree roof, RT 1.14 winter and RT 1.82 summer against RT 0.93 and RT 1.51. On battened out lightweight cladding with an R2.7 batt, RT 3.00 winter against RT 2.75.

Do I need to batten it out?

To get the benefit, yes. A reflective face pressed against roof sheeting or cladding cannot see an air space and contributes almost nothing.

Is it vapour permeable?

No. It is a Class 2 vapour barrier at 0.02141 µg/N·s. Choose a permeable underlay if the roof or wall is designed to dry outward.

Can I use it in a bushfire area?

Yes. Flammability index Low, at or below 5, and it complies with AS 3959-2018 for all BALs. Take independent advice on sarking selection before locking in the BAL design.

Which roll should I order?

The 1350 x 60 m roll covers 81 m² and the 1500 x 30 m roll covers 45 m². The longer roll cuts the number of end joins on a long run.
