Trade Select Sarking TRE is the Tile Roof Extra grade, an extra heavy duty radiant barrier made for sarking under a tiled roof. One size, 1500 mm x 30 m covering 45 m².

Built for the loads a tile roof puts on sarking

Tensile strength is 23.7 kN/m machine direction against a 13.0 kN/m minimum, and 21.9 kN/m lateral against 10.5. Edge tear is 1040 N and 994 N against a 90 N minimum. Those are large margins by any measure, and they are there because tile battens are fixed straight through the sarking and tilers work on top of it. Nominal thickness is 0.22 mm, the thickest membrane in the Trade Select range.

What it does in the roof

It is a Class 2 vapour barrier at 0.012 µg/N·s, a water barrier and an air barrier. Under tiles that combination stops wind driven rain and dust getting into the roof space through the tile laps, which is the usual failure a tiled roof has without sarking. Ametalin declare RT 0.93 winter and RT 1.51 summer for an unventilated 22 degree residential roof.

Fire

Flammability index Low, at or below 5, and compliant with AS 3959-2018 for use in all BALs.

On site

Drape it over the rafters with a slight sag so any water that gets past a tile runs to the gutter rather than pooling on a batten. The foil face is 0.03 emittance and needs the air space under the tiles to work. It is electrically conductive, so keep it clear of wiring. Install to AS 4200.2. Full figures are in the table below.

Thermal, declared total system R-value

Residential roof, 22 degree pitch, unventilated RT 0.93 winter, RT 1.51 summer
Emittance Anti-glare side 0.90, foil side 0.03
Emittance category RN

Calculated to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018 for typical mainland capital city conditions. The reflective face only contributes when it faces an air cavity.

Durability

Dry delamination Pass (AS/NZS 4201.1:1994)
Wet delamination Pass (AS/NZS 4201.2:1994)
Shrinkage, repeated wetting and drying 0.0% (limit under 0.5%)

Compliance

Standards AS/NZS 4200.1:2017
NCC Meets NCC requirements for pliable building membranes, insulation and sarking-type materials

Fitting notes

Install to AS 4200.2 Pliable Building Membranes and Underlays, Part 2. Drape between rafters with a slight sag so water drains to the gutter instead of pooling against a batten. Lap and tape the joins and seal around penetrations. The product is electrically conductive, so keep it clear of wiring. Store the rolls undercover in a clean dry place in the pack provided, away from cement, mortar and other alkaline products.

Figures are taken from the Ametalin technical data sheet for Trade Select Sarking TRE Tile Roof Extra, TPM-23332-0, product code TSTRE. The manufacturer document is linked above. Ametalin can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.

Common questions

Is TRE only for tiled roofs?

It is designed as an under tile sarking, and Ametalin state it is suitable for use in all roofs. The extra strength is aimed at the tile batten fixing and foot traffic a tiled roof involves.

Why is it so much stronger than ordinary sarking?

Extra Heavy duty classification, 0.22 mm thick, 23.7 kN/m tensile and 1040 N edge tear against a 90 N minimum. Battens are fixed straight through it and tilers work on top of it.

Does it stop wind driven rain getting through the tiles?

That is the main reason to sark a tiled roof. It is classified a water barrier and an air barrier, so water and dust that get past a tile lap run down the sarking to the gutter instead of into the roof space.

Is it vapour permeable?

No. It is a Class 2 vapour barrier at 0.012 µg/N·s. If the roof design needs to dry upward, specify a permeable underlay instead.

How should it be laid?

Drape it across the rafters with a slight sag between them so water drains away rather than sitting against a batten, then lap and tape the joins. Install to AS 4200.2.

How much roof does one roll cover?

45 m² before laps. Allow for the overlap at each course and for waste at hips and valleys.
