R3.0 Bradford Gold is a non-combustible glasswool ceiling batt at 165 mm thick. It sits between R2.5 and R3.5 in the Gold range and is a common step up when the ceiling has the depth for it.
Which width
Both widths come 16 to a pack at 1160 mm long. The 430 mm batt covers 7.98 m² per pack and the 580 mm covers 10.77 m². Ceiling joists in Australia are usually set out at 450 mm or 600 mm centres and the widths follow that, but measure yours before ordering.
Choosing between R-values
The jump from R2.5 to R3.0 costs 25 mm of ceiling depth and very little extra labour, which is why it is often the better buy. Above this, R3.5 and R4.1 keep going in the same range. Whether you need any of them depends on climate zone and the rest of the build-up, which R-value by Australian climate zone works through.
On site
Friction fit between the joists, butt the ends, and leave no gaps. Do not squash the batt into a shallower space, because bulk insulation only performs at its full rated thickness. Keep whatever clearance the downlights and flues in that ceiling require.
Non-combustible glasswool, with the thermal rating declared to AS/NZS 4859.1 by the manufacturer. Pack sizes, coverage and CSR product codes are in the table below. Working out how many packs? Coverage per pack explained.
