THOR Thermal Break Tape is a 10 mm thick black polyethylene foam tape, self adhesive on one side. It goes on the outside face of the steel frame, between the frame and the external cladding, to keep the two apart in steel frame homes.
No current R-value
THOR's 2011 data sheet quoted an R-value for this tape without citing a test report, and it was written against an older edition of the building code. THOR publishes no current figure, so we do not quote one. Where a job needs a declared R-value at the frame, use Ametalin ThermalBreak Strips, tested at R0.25, and confirm the requirement with your certifier. Our article on the R0.2 thermal break explains where one is needed.
Fire
The foam is polyethylene, which is combustible, and THOR publishes no fire test results for the tape. Where the wall has to be non-combustible, use the Ametalin Non-combustible ThermalBreak Strip instead.
Rolls
Each roll is 30 mm wide and 10 m long. We sell single rolls, and THOR packs them 12 to a box. Store the rolls in their box, out of direct sun, until they go on. Full details are in the table below.

Fitting notes
The tape goes on the outside face of the steel frame, between the frame and the external cladding. Store the rolls in their box, out of direct sun, until they go on. THOR publishes no current R-value or fire test results for the tape, so check the wall's thermal break and fire requirements with your certifier.
Product details are from THOR Building Products' Thermal Break Tape pages (2013 and 2016), the Rhino product list and the foam tape maker's current page for its 10 mm thermal break grade. THOR's 2011 data sheet is not used for figures, because it cites no test report and was written against an older edition of the building code.
Common questions
Does the tape have an R-value?
THOR publishes no current R-value for it. Its 2011 data sheet quoted one without citing a test report, so we do not repeat it. Where a job needs a declared R-value at the frame, use Ametalin ThermalBreak Strips, tested at R0.25, and confirm the requirement with your certifier.
Where does it go?
On the outside face of the steel frame, between the frame and the external cladding, in steel frame homes.
How far does one roll go?
Each roll is 30 mm wide and 10 m long, so it runs 10 lineal metres. We sell single rolls, and THOR packs them 12 to a box.
Can I use it where the wall has to be non-combustible?
No. The tape is polyethylene foam, which is combustible, and THOR publishes no fire test results for it. Use a non-combustible thermal break such as the Ametalin Non-combustible ThermalBreak Strip instead.
What is it made of?
Black polyethylene foam, 10 mm thick, self adhesive on one side under a release liner.
