Ametalin Non-combustible ThermalBreak Strip is a 10 mm high temperature insulation felt with a self adhesive back, made to give an R0.2 thermal break on a steel frame without introducing any combustible material. 45 mm x 1.2 m, pack of 50 strips.

The problem it solves

Every steel frame that touches its cladding needs a thermal break, and the NCC asks for R0.2. On a normal job a foam strip does that. In a Type A or Type B construction, or a facade that has to be non-combustible, a foam strip is the one line item that quietly breaks the claim. This strip is Not Deemed Combustible when tested to AS 1530.1, so it can go into those walls.

The numbers

Material R-value R0.2 at 23 degrees to AS/NZS 4859:2018, thermal conductivity 0.05 W/m·K, density 288 kg/m³, compression rate over 300 kPa and a maximum temperature of 1300 degrees. It complies with AS 3959-2018 for residential and commercial systems up to and including BAL-FZ.

Where it goes

Continuous facades in Type A and B construction, fire rated boundary walls, and any steel frame where R0.2 is required and the material has to be non-combustible. Ametalin also flag it for NCC 2022 vapour permeable roofs in all BALs.

On site

Cuts to length, self adhesive, chemically stable and compression resistant. Termite, mould and mildew resistant. It goes on the outside of the framing after the membrane, and the cladding should follow straight away. Other widths and lengths are made to order with minimum quantities.

Fitting notes

Install to the exterior side of the structural framing after the pliable building membrane is on, and fit the cladding at the same time for best durability and performance. Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease and oil. Peel the release liner, centre the strip on the framing member and press firmly. Cuts to any length or shape. Store in a clean dry place out of direct sunlight.

Common questions

Why not just use the foam ThermalBreak strip?

Because XPE foam is combustible. In a Type A or Type B construction, or on a facade that has to be non-combustible, the foam strip breaks the claim. This one is Not Deemed Combustible to AS 1530.1.

What R-value does it give?

R0.2 at 23 degrees to AS/NZS 4859:2018, which is exactly the NCC requirement for a steel frame thermal break.

Is it rated for bushfire areas?

It complies with AS 3959-2018 for residential and commercial building systems up to and including BAL-FZ, which is the Flame Zone.

Will it crush under the cladding fixings?

Compression rate is over 300 kPa and the density is 288 kg/m³, so it holds its thickness under normal cladding loads.

How much frame does a pack cover?

50 strips at 1.2 m is 60 m of framing member. On a 2.4 m wall that is two strips per stud, so about 25 studs per pack.

Can I get it in other sizes?

Ametalin make alternative widths and lengths to order, with special pricing and minimum order quantities. RM Industries also list a 45 mm roll version and a 90 mm strip, both price on application. Ask us and we will quote.
