Ametalin ThermalBreak Strips are dual density XPE foam strips with a self adhesive back, run down the outside of a steel frame to break the thermal bridge between the framing and the cladding. 43 mm wide, 2.75 m long folded to 1375 mm, 12 mm thick. Pack of 50 strips.
Why a steel frame needs one
Steel conducts heat roughly a thousand times better than timber. A steel stud that touches both the lining and the cladding carries heat straight through the wall regardless of how much batt sits between the studs, and the cold line it creates on the inside face is where condensation shows up first. The NCC requires an R0.2 thermal break in these situations. This strip is tested at R0.25 to ASTM C518, so it clears the requirement with margin.
Dual density, which is the useful part
A high density XPE face gives the cladding a firm base to fix against, and a medium density core underneath conforms to an imperfect frame. A single density foam has to pick one of those and give up the other.
It also drains
The strip lifts the cladding off the membrane, which creates a drainage plane for water to escape and lets the wall breathe. It is termite, mould and mildew resistant, and it seals around membrane fixings.
Which strip to buy
This is the XPE foam version, R0.25. Where the construction has to be non-combustible, use the Non-combustible ThermalBreak Strip instead. If the job also needs a 20 mm drained and ventilated cavity, look at ThermalCav Drainage Battens, which do both at R0.26.
On site
Cuts to length with a knife. Peel the liner, centre the strip on the framing member and press it home, then get the cladding on without delay. Surfaces have to be clean and dry.

Fitting notes
Install to the exterior face of the framing after the pliable building membrane is on, and fit the cladding at the same time for best durability. Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease and oil. Peel back the release liner, centre the strip on the framing member, press firmly by hand for maximum contact and install the cladding without delay. Store in a clean dry place out of direct sunlight.

Common questions
Does it meet the NCC R0.2 thermal break requirement?
It is tested at R0.25 to ASTM C518, so it exceeds the R0.2 in situ figure the NCC calls for in steel frame construction.
Do I need a thermal break on a timber frame?
No. The requirement is aimed at steel framing, because steel conducts heat far better than timber and bridges straight through the insulation.
How much frame does a pack cover?
50 strips at 2.75 m is 137.5 m of framing member. At 600 mm stud centres that is roughly 55 studs at 2.4 m, or about 33 m of wall.
What is the difference between this and the non-combustible strip?
This one is XPE foam at R0.25. The non-combustible strip is insulation felt at R0.2, Not Deemed Combustible to AS 1530.1, and it is the one to use in Type A and B or BAL-FZ construction.
Do I still need fixings?
The self adhesive back holds the strip while you work, so no temporary fixings are needed. The cladding fixings then go through into the framing as normal.
Why is it folded?
The strip is 2750 mm long and folded to 1375 mm so it packs and handles sensibly. Unfold it as you run it down the stud.
Can I double it up for a thicker break?
Ametalin do not publish a figure for a doubled strip on this product, so do not assume R0.5. If you need more, ThermalCav Drainage Battens are 20 mm at R0.26 with a ventilated cavity built in.
