Pink Batts Ceiling R3.0 is Fletcher Insulation's 155 mm glasswool ceiling batt, with a Material R-value of R3.0, for new homes and retrofits. It is Australian made from FBS-1 bio-soluble glasswool with up to 80% recycled content, in 430 and 580 mm widths, 1160 mm long.
Choosing R3.0 and the width
Fletcher's selection guide says the right R-value often depends on your local climate. Our climate zone guide shows how the NCC sets it. For a higher spec, R3.5 Pink Batts are 175 mm thick. Both widths are listed for timber framed ceilings: pick the one that friction fits between your joists.
Keeping the R3.0
The batts must go in dry and uncompressed, butted closely with no gaps. Compression or gaps reduce the installed performance. They are not a water or vapour barrier and must not be exposed to weather at any stage. Check plasterboard and ceiling framing weight limits first.
Fire and bushfire
The batts are non-combustible to AS/NZS 1530.1, which meets NCC 2022 clause C2D10(1), and BAL compliant from Low to FZ under AS 3959.
Ordering and fitting
Each pack holds 16 batts: 7.98 m² of batt in the 430 mm pack and 10.76 m² in the 580 mm. Fletcher's install guide works out packs from coverage per pack (8.86 m² and 11.95 m², allowing for the joists) plus about 5% waste on simple areas. Leave at least 20 mm below the sarking or roofing, and 50 mm beside downlights and flues unless the fixture maker says otherwise. Full figures are in the table below.

| Packs needed | Area to insulate divided by coverage per pack |
| Wastage | About 5% for simple areas, more for complex ones |
Fletcher's install guide orders by coverage per pack, not by m² per pack.

Fitting notes
Install to AS 3999. Friction fit the batts between the ceiling joists and butt them closely so there are no gaps. When fitting from below before the ceiling goes on, run tape strapping at 90 degrees to the joists, three to four straps per batt, so the batts cannot fall. Carry the insulation at least 50 mm past the inside face of the external wall. Leave at least 20 mm between the batts and the roof sarking or roofing, and keep a 50 mm side clearance from downlights, exhaust fans and flues unless the fixture maker says otherwise. Cut with a sharp knife and a straight edge, never a power tool. Fit the batts dry and at full thickness, never compressed.
Figures are taken from the Fletcher Insulation technical data sheet for Pink Batts Ceiling, RTDS9 Revision 7, issued 17 February 2025, with fitting notes from the Pink Wall and Ceiling batts installation guide IG06 Revision 5, the framing allowance in coverage per pack from the Pink Batts selection guide BR040 Revision 2 and the CodeMark number from Fletcher's Pink Batts Ceiling product page. The manufacturer document is linked above. Fletcher can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.
Common questions
Which width do I need, 430 or 580 mm?
Both are 155 mm thick and rated R3.0. Measure between the ceiling joists and choose the width that friction fits between them with no gaps at the sides. Fletcher lists both sizes for timber framed ceilings.
How many packs do I need?
Each pack holds 16 batts, which is 7.98 m² of batt in the 430 mm pack and 10.76 m² in the 580 mm pack. Fletcher's install guide divides the area by coverage per pack (8.86 m² or 11.95 m², which allows for the joists) and adds about 5% for waste on a simple area.
What R-value will I actually get?
R3.0 is the Material R-value of the batt. Fletcher says it must be installed without compression to keep that rating, and gaps or compression reduce the thermal performance of the installed product.
Can it go in a bushfire prone area?
Fletcher states BAL compliance from BAL Low to FZ under AS 3959. The batts are also non-combustible to AS/NZS 1530.1.
How close can the batts go to downlights?
Leave at least 50 mm side clearance from the body of downlights, exhaust fans and flues unless the fixture maker states otherwise. Cables and equipment covered by bulk insulation may overheat, so follow AS 3999.
Does it need a gap under the roof?
Yes. Fletcher's install guide calls for at least 20 mm between the batts and the roof sarking or roofing. Avoid blocking natural ventilation in the roof space.
Can it be used as a vapour barrier?
No. Fletcher's data sheet says it cannot be used as a water or vapour barrier, and it must not be exposed to weather before, during or after installation.
