Pyrotek Soundlag is a composite acoustic lagging: a reinforced foil faced mass loaded vinyl barrier bonded to a blue convoluted foam decoupling layer. It wraps wastewater pipes, valves, fan housings and ductwork to cut breakout noise. Two grades, both in 1350 mm x 3 m rolls of 4.05 m².
Which grade
Soundlag 4525C is 25 mm thick with a 5 kg/m² barrier. Pyrotek offer it for NCC F5.6 compliance, and their results show it suitable with 10 mm or thicker plasterboard in a habitable room and without a ceiling in a non-habitable room. Insertion loss is 25 dB(A) single layer, 29 dB(A) doubled. The 8000 series grade, Soundlag 8025C, is 29 mm with a heavier 8 kg/m² barrier and is listed for duct lagging, HVAC, fan housings, heat pumps and waste and stormwater pipes.
What the ratings cover
Rw figures in the table belong to the bare barrier layer, not a lagged pipe, and the 8 kg/m² result was tested on Pyrotek's Wavebar. The Class 0 rating covers the foil facing only. Pyrotek's NCC results point to test reports, so check the tested set-up before relying on them.
On site
Lag only after pressure testing, on a clean dry pipe. Pyrotek size the wrap as π x (OD + 2 x thickness) x 1.03 to 1.1, allowing 20% compression on the convoluted foam. Cut from the foil faced barrier side. Overlap every join and seal it with Tape ALR or equivalent, because the smallest gap at a joint loses performance. Full figures are in the table below.

Fitting notes
Lag the pipe only after pressure testing is complete, with the surface clean and dry. Work out the wrap width as π x (pipe outside diameter + 2 x lagging thickness) x 1.03 to 1.1 for the overlap, allowing 20% compression on the convoluted foam thickness. Cut from the foil faced barrier side with a knife or scissors. Overlap every join and seal it with Tape ALR or an equivalent reinforced aluminium tape. Stripping the foam from the overlap edge gives a better acoustic seal. Coverage must be continuous, because the smallest gap at a joint loses performance.
Figures are taken from the Pyrotek technical data sheets for Soundlag 4525C (411IP, Aug-26-EN-411IP) and the Soundlag 8000 Series (418IP, Apr-25-EN-418IP), the Pyrotek Soundlag brochure (May 2026) and the Soundlag pipe lagging installation guide (401-1IG, August 2019). The 4525C data sheet is linked above. Pyrotek can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.
Common questions
Which grade do I need for pipes running past bedrooms?
Soundlag 4525C, because it is the grade Pyrotek publish NCC BCA Volume 1 F5.6 results for. Those results show it suitable in a habitable room with 10 mm or thicker plasterboard, and without a ceiling in a non-habitable room. Check the referenced report for the tested set-up.
What is the difference between 8025C and 4525C?
Soundlag 8025C is 29 mm thick with an 8 kg/m² barrier and is Pyrotek's 8000 series grade for duct lagging, HVAC, fan housings, heat pumps and waste and stormwater pipes. Soundlag 4525C is 25 mm thick with a 5 kg/m² barrier and carries Pyrotek's NCC F5.6 results. Both have a blue convoluted foam decoupling layer.
How much does one roll cover?
Each roll is 1350 mm x 3 m, which is 4.05 m². On pipework, size each wrap with Pyrotek's formula, π x (outside diameter + 2 x thickness) x 1.03 to 1.1, and allow 20% compression on the foam.
Is the Rw 31 figure for Soundlag 8025C?
No. Rw 31 is Pyrotek's result for an 8 kg/m² barrier layer on its own, tested as Wavebar, and Rw 28 is the 4525C barrier layer on its own. Neither figure is the rating of a lagged pipe.
Is Soundlag fire rated?
Both grades have a Class 0 foil facing to BS 476 Parts 6 and 7, which covers the facing rather than the whole composite. Under AS/NZS 1530.3, 4525C scores 0, 0, 0, 1 and 8025C scores 0, 0, 0, 5. Soundlag 4525C is also Group 3 under ISO 5660.
Can it be used on ductwork?
Yes. Pyrotek list duct lagging, HVAC and fan housings among the uses for the 8000 series, which includes 8025C, and publish a separate Soundlag HVAC and ducting installation guide.
