Pyrotek Wavebar is a flexible mass loaded vinyl noise barrier for walls, ceilings, floors and pipework. Black, tear resistant, and built to be laid into a construction rather than seen.
The coincidence dip, in plain terms
Stiff light panels like plasterboard, plywood and hollow core walls have a frequency at which they go transparent to sound. It is a property of the panel, and no amount of extra plasterboard of the same type fixes it, because you just move the problem. Adding a dense limp mass layer shifts that dip to a frequency where it matters less. That is what Wavebar is for, and it is why a wall that already sounds solid can still leak a specific range of noise.
The numbers
4 kg/m² at 2.0 mm gives Rw 25 and STC 26. 8 kg/m² at 4.0 mm gives Rw 31 and STC 31. Transmission loss at 500 Hz is 20.6 dB and 26.0 dB respectively, rising to 30.4 and 35.9 dB at 2000 Hz.
Typical targets
Mechanical plant, engine noise, home theatre and audio rooms. Rolls are 1380 mm wide in 5 m lengths, with 10 m also made.
Practical notes
Resists most chemicals, solvents and petrol, and it is weather and UV resistant, which the foil faced grades are not. Operating range -40 to 100 °C continuous. Cuts with a knife and works around pipes, ducts and cables, and hangs in lengths up to 5 m. Supplied untrimmed, so a surface covering may overhang the usable width. Free from lead and bitumen.

Tested to ISO 15186-1:2003 and ISO 10140-4:2010 at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. Doubling the weight buys you about 6 points of Rw, which is the usual mass law trade-off between cost, thickness and result.

Group 3 means it is not a finished exposed lining in every situation. Check the NCC group number requirement for the space before you leave it on show.

Goes inside the cavity or over the framing before the lining, so it becomes the limp mass layer the wall is missing. Lap and seal the joints, because sound finds any gap you leave, and seal around power points and ducts the same way. Keep it decoupled from the frame where you can, since a barrier screwed hard to a stud short circuits some of what you paid for. Rolls are heavy, so plan the lift.
