Pyrotek Quadzero is a foil faced mass loaded vinyl noise barrier for walls, ceilings, ducts and pipework. It works by mass, not by absorption, which makes it a different tool from an acoustic batt rather than an alternative to one.

Barrier or absorber

An acoustic batt absorbs sound energy inside a cavity. A barrier blocks sound passing through a surface. Most real problems need both, and the two do not substitute for each other. If sound is getting through a wall, duct or pipe, mass is what stops it.

The numbers

The 4 kg/m² grade at 2.0 mm gives Rw 25 and STC 26, with transmission loss of 20.6 dB at 500 Hz and 30.4 dB at 2000 Hz. The 8 kg/m² grade at 4.0 mm gives Rw 31 and STC 31, with 26.0 dB at 500 Hz and 35.9 dB at 2000 Hz. Doubling the mass buys roughly 6 Rw points, which is the usual trade in barrier work.

Why the foil face

The aluminium face bonds readily to other substrates with matching foil tape, which is what makes this the grade of choice for wrapping ducts and pipework. It is rated to ISO 15665 Class A2 and B2 at 6 kg/m², and NORSOK R-004 Class 6 and 7. Operating range is -40 to 100 °C continuous.

Fire and handling

Ignitability, spread of flame and heat evolved indices all 0, smoke developed 0 to 1, Group 3 to AS 3837. Free from lead, bitumen and odour producing oils. It cuts, sews, tapes and mechanically fastens, and hangs in lengths up to 5 m.

For the black, UV and chemical resistant version, see Wavebar. Full figures are in the table below.

Fire hazard properties Group 3 (AS 3837 / ISO 5660-1)
Surface spread of flame Class 1 (BS 476 Part 7)
Smoke density Category 1b (BS 6853 Annex D 8.6)
Toxic fume index R 0.050 (BS 6853 Annex B2)

Colour Silver, aluminium face
Thermal conductivity 0.49 W/m·K
Operating temperature -40 to 100 °C continuous, -40 to 120 °C intermittent

Early fire hazard indices tested to AS 1530.3. The 0,0,0,0-1 result is the reason to pick Quadzero over plain Wavebar where the barrier stays exposed.

What the foil adds

Bonding The foil face bonds readily to other substrates with matching foil tape
Weather Resistant to water, oil and natural weather conditions
Fabrication Cuts, sews, tapes and mechanically fastens
Composition Free from lead, odour producing oils and bitumen

Fitting notes

Same job as Wavebar, with a foil face that makes it easier to bond and better where the barrier stays visible. Wrapped around ducts, pipes, valves and fan casings it cuts noise break-out at the source, which is usually cheaper than treating the room the noise ends up in. Lap and tape every joint with a matching foil tape, and seal around penetrations, because an open seam undoes the rating.
