Ametalin Cap Nails are collated strips of ten nails, each with a 25 mm impact resistant polymer cap on a 25 mm ring shank galvanised nail. Box of 250, supplied as 25 strips.
Why a cap rather than a staple
A staple holds a membrane by two thin wire legs. Ametalin put the holding power of a cap nail at over twenty times a plain nail or staple, because the cap spreads the wind load across 25 mm of membrane instead of concentrating it on a slit. On an exposed site, or on a frame that will stand wrapped for weeks before the cladding arrives, that is the difference between a wrap that is still on the wall and one that has torn off at every fixing.
It also seals the hole it makes
The cap sits over the penetration, so the fixing point stays sealed against air, vapour and water rather than becoming a leak in the barrier.
Timber framing
These are for timber. Fix at 300 mm centres on a timber framed cavity wall and 150 mm centres direct to stud, before the cladding goes on. On a foam cored product such as ThermalBreak 7, drive the cap so it holds without crushing the foam. For steel framing, use Double Sided Fixing Tape instead.
How to use the strip
Take one strip of ten from the box, place the point of the last cap nail where the fixing goes, centre the cap on the stud, tap to start then drive it home, and twist the rest of the gang off. End tabs let you use the last cap in the strip.

Fitting notes
Take one strip of ten from the box and place the point of the last cap nail where the fixing is needed. Centre the cap on the stud, tap the nail to start it, then drive it home with a firmer blow. Twist the remaining gang off and move to the next fixing point. On thicker foam core products such as ThermalBreak, drive the cap so it holds without fully compressing the product. Store in a clean dry place out of direct sunlight in the pack provided.

Common questions
How many do I need?
At 300 mm centres on a timber framed cavity wall you use roughly 3.3 fixings per metre of stud. A box of 250 covers about 75 m of stud line, so around 30 studs at 2.4 m. Direct to stud at 150 mm centres doubles that.
Can I use them on a steel frame?
No, these are nails for timber. On steel framing use Trade Select Double Sided Fixing Tape, which fixes the membrane without penetrating the stud.
Do they leak at the fixing point?
The cap sits over the penetration and helps seal it for air, vapour and water. That is a large part of why they are recommended over staples.
Are they suitable for high wind areas?
Yes, that is where they earn their place. The cap distributes wind load across the membrane rather than concentrating it at a slit, which is what causes blow-offs.
Can I use them on foam faced products like ThermalBreak?
Yes, but do not drive the cap so hard that it fully compresses the foam. Ametalin call this out specifically, because a crushed foam core loses its thermal break.
