Trade Select VapourTech Brane VHP is a vapour permeable membrane from Ametalin, stocked in four roll sizes from 1370 x 30 m covering 41.5 m² up to 3050 x 30 m covering 91.5 m².

VHP means very high permeability

A high permeability membrane lets water vapour move out of the structure readily while still shedding liquid water from outside. That combination is what lets a wall dry outward instead of holding moisture in the frame, and it is the reason permeable membranes moved up the priority list in recent code cycles. Condensation and what NCC 2022 asks for covers the reasoning.

The wide rolls

The 2740 mm and 3050 mm rolls run a full storey in one piece and remove the horizontal join. On a commercial elevation that is the main reason to choose them.

Barrier classifications

Vapour control Class 4 Vapour Permeable (ASTM E96)
Vapour permeance 12.848 µg/N·s
Water control Water Barrier (AS/NZS 4201.4:1994)
Electrical conductivity Non-conductive

Very High Permeance. Water vapour absorbs and diffuses through the non-woven core while liquid water cannot pass inwards.

Strength

Duty classification Light Wall (AS/NZS 4200.1:2017)
Nominal material thickness 0.38 mm
Burst strength 254 N (min 200 N, AS 2001.2.19-1998)
Edge tear machine direction 180 N (min 45 N)
Edge tear lateral direction 89 N (min 45 N)
Dry and wet delamination Pass (AS/NZS 4201.1 and 4201.2:1994)
Shrinkage, repeated wetting and drying 0.0% (limit under 0.5%)

Fire

Flammability index Low, at or below 5 (AS 1530.2-1993)
Bushfire areas All BALs

Thermal, declared total system R-value

Lightweight cladding fixed to battens plus R2.7 batt RT 2.92 winter, RT 2.77 summer
Brick veneer wall plus R2.7 batt RT 2.93 winter, RT 2.78 summer
Emittance 0.9 both faces, IR Non-reflective
Emittance category NN

Calculated to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018 for typical mainland capital city conditions. This membrane is not reflective, so it does not need an air gap to perform.

Climate zones and exposure

Suitable Climate Zones 2 to 8, all wall systems, behind all cladding types
Not recommended ABCB Climate Zone 1, where a Class 1 or 2 vapour barrier should be used instead
UV exposure 30 days
Chemical Chemically non-reactive, suits corrosive coastal conditions

Fitting notes

Install to AS 4200.2:2017 Pliable Building Membranes and Underlays, Part 2. Behind non-absorbent cladding such as steel, provide drainage for any trapped moisture. The 2740 mm roll halves installation time on a full storey and removes a horizontal join. Do not leave the wrap exposed beyond 30 days of UV. Store rolls undercover in a clean dry place in the pack provided.

Common questions

Which climate zones is it for?

Climate Zones 2 to 8. Ametalin specifically say it is not recommended in ABCB Climate Zone 1, where a Class 1 or Class 2 vapour barrier should be used instead.

Is it a water barrier as well as permeable?

Yes, and that is unusual. It is a Class 4 Vapour Permeable membrane and a Water Barrier at the same time, so it can go behind all cladding types rather than only behind a drained cavity.

What does VHP mean?

Very High Permeance. At 12.848 µg/N·s it is far more open than a micro-perforated wrap, because the permeability comes from the non-woven core rather than from holes punched through a foil.

Why buy the 2740 or 3050 mm rolls?

They run a full storey in one piece. That removes the horizontal join, halves the installation time and cuts the number of laps that have to be taped correctly.

How long can it stay exposed?

30 days of UV exposure. Beyond that the cladding needs to be on.

Is it reflective?

No. Emittance is 0.9 on both faces and it is classified IR Non-reflective. It does not need an air gap behind it to work, which makes the installation simpler than a foil wrap.

What is the white faced roll?

It is the same membrane with a white outer face, product code TSVHP-W-45, in the 1500 x 30 m size. Choose it where the wrap will be visible through an open joint cladding and the standard print would show.

Is it safe near wiring?

It is classified non-conductive, which is one advantage over a foil wrap. Normal electrical safety practice still applies.
