Trade Select Sarking Tape is the standard silver foil tape for sealing the joins in reflective sarking, wall wrap and underfloor insulation. Metallised polyester, 80 microns total, 48 mm wide on a 50 m roll. Sold per roll, 24 rolls to a carton.

An untaped join is not a barrier

A wall wrap or sarking is only an air and vapour barrier where it is continuous. Every lap and every penetration is a hole until it is taped. This is the tape Ametalin specify for their own membranes, so the adhesive and the foil are matched to what you are sticking it to.

Why not cloth duct tape

Peel adhesion is 15 N/25 mm and tensile strength is 95 N/25 mm, both higher than a typical cloth duct tape, and the acrylic adhesive is a cold weather formula that still grabs at low temperature. It is UV resistant and will not delaminate with age, which matters because sarking often sits exposed for weeks before the cladding goes on.

Temperature range

Service temperature runs from minus 30 to plus 100 degrees. Apply it between 10 and 40 degrees onto a surface that is clean, dry and free of oil, and press it down with a plastic squeegee so it follows every contour. Cold or dusty surfaces are the usual reason a foil tape lets go later.

Other uses

It is hand tearable and vapour sealing, so it also works for HVAC and ducting closure. Full figures are in the table below.

Fitting notes

The surface must be clean, dry and free of oil and other contaminants, or the tape will release later. Apply between 10 and 40 degrees and press the tape down with a plastic squeegee so it follows every contour. Hand tearable, so no knife is needed. Store in a clean dry place out of direct sunlight.

Common questions

Will it stick to a vapour permeable membrane?

For a permeable or airtight membrane Ametalin recommend QuickTape, which has a woven fabric carrier and a more aggressive initial tack. Sarking Tape is aimed at foil faced sarking, wall wrap and floor insulation.

How much does one roll seal?

50 m of join per roll at 48 mm wide. As a rough guide, one roll covers the horizontal laps on about 40 m² of wall wrap, but penetrations and vertical joins add to that.

Can I use it in cold weather?

The adhesive is a cold weather acrylic and the tape holds down to minus 30 degrees in service, but it should be applied between 10 and 40 degrees. Applying below 10 degrees is where most foil tape failures start.

Does it need a squeegee?

Yes, use one. Ametalin specify pressing the tape down with a plastic squeegee so it follows all contours. Thumb pressure alone leaves air under the tape.

Is it the same as cloth duct tape?

No. It has higher adhesion and tack, it is UV resistant and it is vapour sealing. Cloth duct tape dries out and releases, which is why it should not be used on a building membrane.

Can I use it on ductwork?

Yes. Ametalin list HVAC and ducting closure as an intended use, with a service range to plus 100 degrees.
