Sisalation Foam Cell Multipurpose is a five layer foil faced foam sarking for walls and roofs, 8.4 mm thick with a 150 mm overlap flap. 1350 mm x 22.25 m covering 30 m², 18 kg per roll.
The thick one in the Foam Cell range
At 8.4 mm it carries a material R-value of R0.25, which is high for a sarking, and its Extra Heavy duty classification means it takes site handling that lighter membranes do not. Both faces are anti-glare coated aluminium foil over a cross linked closed cell foam core, so it reflects up to 95% of radiant heat from either side.
Barrier performance
Class 1 vapour barrier at under 0.0022 µg/N·s and a water barrier to AS/NZS 4201.4. This is a barrier, not a breather, so check that is what the build-up wants.
Fire and bushfire
Group 2 to AS 5637.1, flammability index 5 or lower, ignitability, spread of flame and heat evolved all 0, smoke developed 1. Bushfire ratings are BAL Low to 40 in a roof and BAL Low to Flame Zone in a wall.
On site
The 150 mm overlap flap means the next run laps onto a foam free strip, which removes most of the taping. The reflective face needs an air gap in front of it. It is electrically conductive, so keep it clear of wiring.

Technical data
Fletcher technical data sheet (PDF)Sizes stocked
| Nominal thickness | Width | Overlap flap | Roll length | Area per roll | Weight per roll | Product code |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8.4 mm | 1350 mm | 150 mm | 22.25 m | 30 m² | 18 kg | 395264 |
Thermal
| Material R-value | R0.25 m²K/W (ASTM C518) |
|---|---|
| Emittance, reflective face | 0.03, IR reflective (AS/NZS 4201.5) |
| Emittance, anti-glare face | 0.06, IR semi-reflective (AS/NZS 4201.5) |
| Radiant heat | Reflects up to 95% of the sun's radiant heat |
The R-value of the material on its own is only part of the story. Under a roof, install the reflective face inwards with a minimum 20 mm air gap, because the gap is what does most of the work.
Membrane classification
| Duty classification | Extra Heavy (AS/NZS 4200.1 Table 1) |
|---|---|
| Vapour control | Class 1 vapour barrier (AS/NZS 4200.1) |
| Water control | Water barrier (AS/NZS 4201.4) |
| Vapour permeance | Under 0.0022 µg/Ns (ASTM E96) |
| Shrinkage | 0.5% or lower (AS/NZS 4201.3) |
| Dry delamination | Pass (AS/NZS 4201.1) |
| Wet delamination | Pass (AS/NZS 4201.2) |
| Electrical conductivity | Electrically conductive (AS/NZS 3100) |
Fire
| Group number | Group 2 (AS 5637.1) |
|---|---|
| Heat release rate and SMOGRA | Under 100 (AS ISO 9705) |
| Flammability index | 5 or lower, Low (AS/NZS 1530.2) |
| Ignitability index | 0 |
| Spread of flame index | 0 |
| Heat evolved index | 0 |
| Smoke developed index | 1 |
| Bushfire areas | Roof BAL Low to 40, wall BAL Low to Flame Zone (AS 3959) |
The Group 2 rating means it can be used as an exposed wall or ceiling lining in Class 2 to 9 buildings. Early fire hazard indices tested to AS/NZS 1530.3.
Build-up
| Layer 1 | Aluminium foil with anti-glare coating |
|---|---|
| Layer 2 | High density polyethylene weave |
| Layer 3 | Cross linked closed cell polyethylene foam core |
| Layer 4 | High density polyethylene weave |
| Layer 5 | Aluminium foil with anti-glare coating |
Three jobs in one roll: insulation, thermal break and vapour barrier.
Fitting notes
Roll it out with the 150 mm foam free strip along one edge, then lap the next run onto that strip. That is what the flap is for and it saves most of the taping. Under a roof, the reflective face goes inwards and needs a 20 mm air gap to perform. Install to AS/NZS 4200.2 if you are relying on it as a water and vapour barrier. The foil conducts electricity, so keep it well clear of wiring and switchboards while you work.
