Rhino Wrap RP-51 is a heavy duty reflective wall wrap from Thor Building Products, rated Class 2, Vapour Barrier and Water Barrier. Aluminium foil is bonded to a reinforcing polymer mesh, treated blue to reduce glare. Thor list it for residential and commercial walls.
Check the climate zone first
NCC 2022 sets a minimum vapour permeance for a membrane outside the insulation in the external wall of a house, apartment or Class 4 part of a building: 0.143 µg/N·s in climate zones 4 and 5, and 1.140 µg/N·s in zones 6 to 8. A Class 2 vapour barrier meets that deemed-to-satisfy rule only in zones 1 to 3, and Melbourne and Sydney are outside them. For a brick veneer house there, look at Trade Select Wall Wrap xR Micro-perforated HD.
R-value and fire rating
Thor state that up to R1.1 may be added to the wall system behind brick veneer or other cladding with a drained cavity, and recommend at least 20 mm of air space against the foil face. Flammability index is Low (≤5). It is suitable for BAL 12.5 to FZ under AS 3959 section 3.10, except exposed installations in fire control rooms or fire-isolated exits.
Roll and site notes
Each 1350 mm x 60 m roll covers 81 m². Install to AS/NZS 4200.2 and clad as soon as you can. Store rolls dry, keep wet concrete and mortar off the wrap and allow for up to 2% shrinkage. The foil conducts electricity, so keep it clear of wiring. Full figures are in the table below.

Barrier classifications
| Vapour control | Class 2, Vapour Barrier |
|---|---|
| Water control | Water Barrier |
| Electrical conductivity | Conductive |
It holds water vapour in, so check the climate zone before using it on a house wall.
Thermal

|---|---|
| Added R-value, wall system | Up to R1.1 behind brick veneer or other cladding with a drained cavity (Thor's claim) |
| Air space | Minimum 20 mm next to the reflective foil face recommended |
The foil only adds value where it faces an air space.

|---|---|
| Bushfire Attack Level | BAL 12.5 to FZ (AS 3959 section 3.10), except exposed installations in fire control rooms or fire-isolated exits |

Material and handling
| Construction | Aluminium foil bonded to reinforcing polymer mesh, mesh treated blue |
|---|---|
| Thickness | < 1 mm |
| Shrinkage | Up to 2% can be expected |
| Storage | Dry area, no contact with wet concrete or mortar |
Compliance
| Standard | AS/NZS 4200.1, Pliable Building Membranes |
|---|---|
| Installation | AS/NZS 4200.2 |
| NCC 2022, external walls of Class 1, 2 and 4 buildings | Meets the deemed-to-satisfy vapour permeance rule in climate zones 1 to 3 only |
Melbourne and Sydney are outside those zones, so a house there needs a vapour permeable wrap (Class 4 in zones 6 to 8).
Fitting notes
Install to AS/NZS 4200.2. Thor recommend an air space of at least 20 mm against the reflective foil face to get the most from the insulation value. Keep wet concrete and mortar off the wrap, and keep it clear of electrical wiring because the foil is conductive. Store the rolls in a dry area, fix the external cladding as soon as possible after the wrap goes up, and allow for shrinkage of up to 2%.
Figures are taken from the Thor Building Products data sheet for Rhino Wrap RP-51 and RP-51B, July 2022. The manufacturer document is linked above. The NCC 2022 row follows Volume One F8D3(2) and Housing Provisions 10.8.1(2). Thor Building Products can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.
Common questions
Is Rhino Wrap RP-51 a breather wrap?
No. Thor class RP-51 as a Class 2 Vapour Barrier and a Water Barrier. The breather on the same data sheet is Rhino Wrap Breather RP-51B, which is Class 3, Vapour Permeable.
Can I use it on a house in Melbourne or Sydney?
Not as a deemed-to-satisfy solution. Under NCC 2022, a membrane on the outside of the insulation in a house wall needs at least 0.143 µg/N·s in climate zones 4 and 5 and at least 1.140 µg/N·s in zones 6 to 8, and a Class 2 vapour barrier sits below both. Melbourne is zone 6 and Sydney zone 5 or 6, so use a vapour permeable wrap there, Class 4 in zones 6 to 8.
What R-value does it add to a wall?
Thor state that up to R1.1 may be added to the wall system when it is installed behind brick veneer or other cladding with a drained cavity. They recommend at least 20 mm of air space next to the foil face to get the full value.
How much wall does one roll cover?
One roll is 1350 mm wide and 60 m long, which is 81 m².
Is it suitable in bushfire areas?
Thor rate Rhino Wrap RP-51 as suitable for BAL 12.5 to FZ under AS 3959 section 3.10. The exception is exposed installations in fire control rooms or fire-isolated exits.
Is it safe around wiring?
Keep it clear of wiring. The foil is electrically conductive.
How long can it sit before the cladding goes on?
Thor do not give a time. Their sheet says to install the external cladding as soon as possible, store the rolls in a dry area and expect shrinkage of up to 2%.
