Rhino Primo Wrap (RP-51-PM) is a single sided reflective foil wall wrap from Thor Building Products, made for brick veneer and fibre cement walls. It is medium duty, with a Class 2 Vapour Barrier rating and a Water Barrier classification. Thor list it for BAL 12.5 to FZ. One roll is 1350 mm x 60 m and covers 81 m².
A vapour barrier, so check the climate zone
Thor describe Primo as non-permeable (0.106 µg/N.s) and recommend it for warmer climates, since a vapour barrier on the cold side of a wall can trap condensation. Under NCC 2022 a house wall wrap must reach 0.143 µg/N.s in climate zones 4 and 5 and 1.140 µg/N.s in zones 6 to 8. Primo meets that deemed-to-satisfy rule only in zones 1 to 3, which excludes house walls in Melbourne and Sydney. Use a vapour permeable wrap there, such as Sisalation Vapawrap.
What the foil adds
Behind brick veneer or other cladding with a drained cavity, Thor state up to R1.1 may be added to the wall. For a brick cavity wall with a 90 mm stud and 40 mm cavity, they declare RT 1.2 summer and RT 1.3 winter. Leave at least 20 mm of air space next to the foil face to get there.
On site
Install to AS/NZS 4200.2, seal the overlaps and clad promptly, as the wrap is not made for long weather exposure. The foil conducts electricity, so keep it and any conductive fasteners clear of wiring. Full figures are in the table below.

| Air space next to the foil face | Minimum 20 mm recommended |
The RT figures are whole wall totals, and a ventilated cavity lowers them.
Fire

| Bushfire Attack Level | BAL 12.5 to FZ (AS 3959, section 3.10) |
Thor exclude exposed installations in fire control rooms and fire-isolated exits from the BAL rating.
Vapour and water control
| Vapour control classification | Class 2, Vapour Barrier (ASTM E96) |
|---|---|
| Vapour permeability | 0.106 µg/N.s (ASTM E96) |
| Water control classification | Water Barrier (AS/NZS 4201.4) |
Thor describe Primo as non-permeable, so do not use it where a breathable wrap is specified.
NCC 2022 wall wrap permeance, houses and apartments
| Climate zones 1 to 3 | No vapour permeance minimum in this clause |
|---|---|
| Climate zones 4 and 5 | At least 0.143 µg/N.s required, Primo does not meet it |
| Climate zones 6 to 8 | At least 1.140 µg/N.s required, Primo does not meet it |
| Clause | NCC 2022 Volume 1 F8D3(2), Housing Provisions 10.8.1(2) |
Melbourne is zone 6 and Sydney is zone 5 or 6, so a house wall there needs a more permeable wrap.

Fitting notes
Install to AS/NZS 4200.2 and check the cladding maker's wall wrap requirements first. Fix with battens or top-hats, or with staples, washers and fasteners at 300 mm centres, and seal all overlaps and discontinuities so the wrap acts as a draught and vapour control layer. Leave at least 20 mm of air space next to the foil face. Keep it off wet concrete and mortar, store the rolls dry and allow for shrinkage of up to 2%. Clad as soon as you can: wrap exposed to harsh weather or for more than 6 weeks should be inspected, and damaged wrap repaired or replaced, before the cladding goes on. The foil conducts electricity, so keep it and any conductive fasteners away from wiring, and do not install it horizontally in the ceiling or subfloor of an existing building.
Figures are taken from the Thor Building Products data sheet for Rhino Primo Wrap RP-51-PM, July 2022, with fixing, weather exposure and condensation guidance from Thor's earlier Sep 2019 sheet. The manufacturer document is linked above. The climate zone limits are from NCC 2022 Volume 1 F8D3(2) and Housing Provisions 10.8.1(2). Thor Building Products can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.
Common questions
Is Rhino Primo Wrap a breathable wall wrap?
No. Thor rate it Class 2, Vapour Barrier at 0.106 µg/N.s and describe it as non-permeable, even though the sheet heading says micro perforated. They do not recommend it as a substitute for a wall breather where air has to pass through the membrane.
Can I use it on a house wall in Melbourne or Sydney?
Not as a deemed-to-satisfy wrap. NCC 2022 asks a membrane outside the wall insulation of a house for at least 0.143 µg/N.s in climate zones 4 and 5 and 1.140 µg/N.s in zones 6 to 8, and Primo is 0.106 µg/N.s. Melbourne is zone 6 and Sydney is zone 5 or 6, so choose a vapour permeable wrap there.
How much wall does one roll cover?
The 1350 mm x 60 m roll is 81 m², the full roll area. Allow extra for the overlaps.
What R-value does it add to a wall?
Thor state up to R1.1 may be added when it is installed behind brick veneer or other cladding with a drained cavity. Their declared total for a brick cavity wall with a 90 mm stud and 40 mm cavity is RT 1.2 summer and RT 1.3 winter. Leave at least 20 mm of air space next to the foil face.
Is it suitable in a bushfire area?
Thor rate it suitable for BAL 12.5 to FZ under AS 3959 section 3.10, except in exposed installations in fire control rooms or fire-isolated exits. The flammability index is Low (5 or less).
How long can it be left exposed before cladding?
Not for long. Thor's 2019 sheet says it is not designed for prolonged exposure and the cladding should go on without delay. Wrap exposed to harsh weather, or for more than 6 weeks, should be inspected and any damage repaired or replaced first.
Can it go near electrical wiring?
No. The aluminium foil conducts electricity, so keep the wrap and any conductive fasteners away from wiring. Thor also say it should not be installed horizontally in the ceiling or subfloor of an existing building.
