Rhino Foam 80 AG Thermal Break is Thor Building Products' 8.0 mm foil faced foam insulation for roofs and walls, rated R0.20 as a material. A closed cell fire retardant foam core is laminated to two layers of reflective woven aluminium foil, one with an anti-glare coating.

80 or 40

Rhino Foam 40 AG is the 4.0 mm grade at R0.10, sold by Thor for shed and domestic roofs and walls. Thor sells the 80 as a thermal break, developed for steel-framed construction. Its data sheet dates from August 2021, before NCC 2022, so confirm the requirement with your certifier. Our article on the R0.2 thermal break explains where one is needed.

Where the R-value comes from

Thor's roof totals assume a fully sealed airspace between the metal sheeting and the foam. A pitched metal roof with a flat ceiling reaches 1.21 in winter and 2.59 in summer. Dust on upward facing surfaces and a ventilated cavity lower the result.

Fire and vapour

The flammability index is Low (5 or less) to AS 1530.2. Thor rates it up to BAL 40 in roof systems and BAL FZ in wall systems. It is a Class 2 vapour barrier. Check the NCC condensation provisions for your climate zone.

Roll and fitting

Each roll is 1350 mm x 22.25 m, covers 30 m² and weighs about 15 kg. Install to AS 4200.2 and keep 50 mm clear of light fittings and hot flues. The foil conducts electricity, so use plastic fixings near wiring. Full figures are in the table below.

Rhino · Closed cell fire retardant foam core laminated to two layers of reflective woven aluminium foil, reinforced with two layers of high density polyethylene weave; one foil face has an anti-glare coating · Thermal break for roof and wall applications: metal roofs with a fully sealed airspace, metal clad walls, brick veneer and double brick walls application

Thermal, Thor total R-values (winter / summer)

Pitched metal roof, flat ceiling, fully sealed airspace 1.21 / 2.59
Pitched metal roof, 22° warehouse, fully sealed airspace 0.90 / 1.53
Flat metal roof, suspended ceiling, fully sealed airspace 1.28 / 3.08
Flat metal roof, warehouse, fully sealed airspace 0.89 / 1.80
Metal clad wall 1.18 / 1.11
Metal clad wall and plasterboard lining 1.73 / 1.68
Calculation basis AS/NZS 4859.1

Thor notes that the totals depend on installation and conditions, and drop where dust settles on upward facing surfaces or the cavity is ventilated.

Fire

Flammability index Low (≤ 5), AS 1530.2
Early fire hazard indices 0/0/0/1
Bushfire, roof systems BAL LOW to BAL 40
Bushfire, wall systems BAL LOW to BAL FZ

The roof rating stops at BAL 40, so a BAL FZ roof needs a different product.

Vapour, water and electrical

Vapour classification Class 2, Vapour Barrier

Electrical conductivity Conductive

Check the NCC condensation provisions for the climate zone before using a vapour barrier on an external wall or under a roof.

Fitting notes

Install to AS 4200.2. Before you start, check that all electrical cabling, fittings and wiring are in a safe condition and cannot come into contact with the foil, because the foil faces are electrically conductive. Keep a minimum 50 mm clearance from light fittings (check the safe distance with the lighting supplier) and 50 mm around hot flues. Use plastic fixings where electrical componentry is close to the work, and no metal fixings near electrical wiring. Thor's roof R-values assume a fully sealed airspace between the metal roof and the foam. Thor recommends UV protective sunglasses when installing outside. Store rolls in their original packaging in a cool, dry, well ventilated place, out of direct sunlight and away from sparks and flame. Thor's safety data sheet says the foam must be kept away from ignition sources until fully degassed, and asks for air to circulate for at least 5 minutes after opening a closed vehicle or container.

Figures are taken from the Thor Building Products data sheet for Rhino Foam 80 Thermal Break, product code RF-80AG, August 2021. Thor no longer posts the sheet on its website, and the copy linked above is the last version Thor published. Storage and handling notes come from Thor's Rhino Foam safety data sheet, November 2019. Thor can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.

Common questions

Is Rhino Foam 80 AG a thermal break?

Thor sells it as a thermal break, developed for steel-framed construction, and rates the 8.0 mm material at R0.20. The data sheet dates from August 2021, before NCC 2022, so confirm what your roof or wall needs with the certifier.

What total R-value will a metal roof get?

Thor's roof figures assume a fully sealed airspace between the metal roof and the foam. A pitched metal roof with a flat ceiling reaches 1.21 in winter and 2.59 in summer, and a 22 degree warehouse roof 0.90 and 1.53. Dust and a ventilated cavity lower those totals.

What total R-value does it give in a wall?

In Thor's figures a metal clad wall reaches 1.18 winter and 1.11 summer, or 1.73 and 1.68 with a plasterboard lining.

Can it be used in a bushfire prone area?

Thor rates it from BAL LOW to BAL 40 in roof systems and from BAL LOW to BAL FZ in wall systems. The flammability index is Low (5 or less) to AS 1530.2.

How much does one roll cover?

One roll is 1350 mm by 22.25 m and covers 30 m². It weighs about 15 kg.

Is it a breathable membrane?

No. Thor classifies it as a Class 2 vapour barrier and a water barrier. Check the NCC condensation provisions for the climate zone before using it on an external wall or under a roof.

Is it safe around wiring and downlights?

The foil faces are electrically conductive. Thor asks for at least 50 mm clearance from light fittings and around hot flues, plastic fixings near electrical componentry and no metal fixings close to wiring.

What is the difference between Rhino Foam 40 AG and 80 AG?

The 40 is 4.0 mm and R0.10, and Thor sells it for shed and domestic roofs and walls. The 80 is 8.0 mm and R0.20, and it is the one of the two that Thor sells as a thermal break.
