Rhino Foam 40 AG is a 4 mm foil faced foam insulation from Thor Building Products' Rhino range, rated R0.10. A closed cell, fire retardant foam core is laminated to two layers of reflective woven aluminium foil, with an anti-glare coating on one face. Thor list it for shed and domestic roofs and walls. It is Australian made and comes as a fibre-free, non-itchy roll.
Where the R-value comes from
The foil faces reflect up to 97% of radiant heat flow but need an air space beside them to work. For a 22 degree pitched metal roof with a flat ceiling, unventilated, Thor give a total system figure of RT 1.35 winter and RT 2.29 summer. Dust on upward facing foil lowers it.
Not the R0.2 thermal break
This roll is not an R0.2 thermal break. Thor's 8 mm Rhino Foam 80 AG Thermal Break is the R0.20 grade. Our R0.2 thermal break article explains where one is needed.
Fire and vapour
The flammability index is Low (5 or less) to AS 1530.2. Thor rate it from BAL LOW to BAL 40 in roof systems and BAL LOW to BAL FZ in wall systems. It is a Class 2 vapour barrier, so check the condensation design first.
Roll and fitting
Each 1350 mm x 22.25 m roll covers 30 m² and weighs about 10 kg. Keep at least 50 mm from light fittings and hot flues. The foil conducts electricity, so use plastic fixings near wiring. Install to AS 4200.2. Full figures are in the table below.

| Roll size | Thickness (nominal) | Coverage | Roll weight (approx.) | Product code |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1350 mm x 22.25 m | 4.0 mm | 30 m² | 10 kg | RF-40AG |
Thermal
| Material R-value | R0.10 m²K/W |
|---|---|
| Radiant heat | Reflects up to 97% of radiant heat flow |
| Reflectivity | Silver foil face 97%, anti-glare face 95% |
| Emissivity | Reflective silver 0.03, anti-glare 0.05 |
The foil faces need an air space beside them to work, and dust on upward facing foil lowers the R-value.

|---|---|
| Early fire hazard | 0/0/0/1 |
| Bushfire, roof systems | BAL LOW to BAL 40 |
| Bushfire, wall systems | BAL LOW to BAL FZ |
The roof rating stops at BAL 40, so it is not rated for a BAL FZ roof.

Fitting notes
Install to AS 4200.2. Before fitting, check that the electrical cabling, fittings and wiring are in a safe condition and that the foil cannot touch live wiring or downlights, because it is electrically conductive. Keep at least 50 mm clear of light fittings (check the safe distance with the lighting supplier) and 50 mm around hot flues. Use plastic fixings where electrical components are close by, and no metal fixings near wiring. Thor recommend UV protective sunglasses when installing outside. Store the rolls in their packaging in a cool, dry, well ventilated place, out of direct sun and away from naked flame and sparks.
Figures are taken from the Thor Building Products data sheet for Rhino Foam 40 Anti-Glare, product code RF-40AG, August 2021, with storage and handling notes from Thor's Rhino Foam safety data sheet, November 2019. The manufacturer document is linked above. Thor can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.
Common questions
What R-value does Rhino Foam 40 AG give?
The roll itself is R0.10. Thor's total system figure for a 22 degree pitched metal roof with a flat ceiling, unventilated, is RT 1.35 winter and RT 2.29 summer. The system figure counts the whole roof build, including its air spaces.
Is it an R0.2 thermal break?
No. Its material R-value is R0.10. Thor's Rhino Foam 80 AG Thermal Break is rated R0.20.
Can it be used in a bushfire area?
Thor's data sheet rates it for roof systems from BAL LOW to BAL 40 and wall systems from BAL LOW to BAL FZ. It is not rated for a BAL FZ roof.
Is it a vapour barrier or a breathable membrane?
A vapour barrier. Thor class it as Class 2, Vapour Barrier, and as a Water Barrier, so check the condensation design of the roof or wall before using it.
How much does one roll cover?
One roll is 1350 mm by 22.25 m, which Thor list as 30 m², and it weighs about 10 kg.
Can it go near downlights and wiring?
Keep it clear. Leave at least 50 mm around light fittings and hot flues, and because the foil is electrically conductive, make sure it cannot touch live wiring and use plastic fixings near electrical components.
Can it go in a wall?
Yes. Thor give total system figures of RT 1.84 winter and RT 1.80 summer for a steel stud framed wall with 90 mm studs, and RT 1.93 winter and RT 1.90 summer for a brick veneer wall with 90 mm studs.
Is it itchy to handle?
No. Thor describe it as a fibre-free, non-itchy roll. They recommend UV protective sunglasses when installing outside.
