Pink Batts Ceiling R7.0 is a 285 mm glasswool batt from Fletcher Insulation for the ceilings of new homes and retrofits, and the highest R-value in the Pink Batts Ceiling range. Australian made using up to 80% recycled content.

Measure the roof space first

Fletcher's install guide calls for at least 20 mm between the batts and the sarking or roofing, so the roof space has to take 285 mm of batt plus that gap, right out to the eaves. A compressed batt does not deliver its rated R-value. If the space is short, R6.0 Pink Ceiling Batts at 250 mm are the next step down.

Ceiling load

Where the plasterboard has a load limit under 4 kg/m², Fletcher recommend stringing or taping the frame before the R7.0 batts go in. Check the plasterboard maker's weight limits first.

Packs and coverage

Four batts to a pack, 1160 mm long, in 430 and 580 mm widths: 2.0 m² and 2.69 m² of batt per pack. Fletcher's coverage per pack allows for the framing: 2.24 and 3.03 m². Their install guide counts packs from that figure, plus about 5% wastage on a simple ceiling.

On site

Non-combustible to AS/NZS 1530.1 and rated BAL Low to Flame Zone under AS 3959. Friction fit between the joists, butt the batts tight, and leave at least 50 mm side clearance around downlights, exhaust fans and flues unless the fitting's maker says otherwise. Keep the packs dry. Install to AS 3999. Full figures are in the table below.

Fitting notes

Install to AS 3999. Friction fit the batts between the ceiling joists and butt them closely so there are no gaps. When fitting from below before the ceiling is lined, run tape strapping at 90 degrees to the joists, three to four straps per batt, so the batts cannot fall. Where the ceiling plasterboard has a load limit under 4 kg/m², string or tape the frame before installing the R7.0 batts. Keep at least 20 mm between the batts and the roof sarking or roofing, and a 50 mm side clearance from downlights, exhaust fans and flues unless the fitting's maker says otherwise. Take the ceiling insulation at least 50 mm past the inside face of the external walls. Cut with a sharp knife and a straight edge, never with power tools. Install the batts dry and without compression so they keep their rated R-value.

Figures are taken from the Fletcher Insulation technical data sheet for Pink Batts Ceiling, RTDS9 Revision 7, issued 17 February 2025. Fitting guidance is from the Fletcher installation guide for Pink wall and ceiling batts, IG06 Revision 5, and the CodeMark number from Fletcher's Pink Batts Ceiling product page. The manufacturer document is linked above. Fletcher can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.

Common questions

Will R7.0 fit in my roof space?

The batt is 285 mm thick, and Fletcher's install guide calls for at least 20 mm between the batts and the roof sarking or roofing. Check that depth across the whole ceiling, including out at the eaves. A batt squashed to fit will not deliver its rated R-value.

What if the roof is too shallow near the eaves?

Do not compress the R7.0 batt into the gap. Where space forces a thinner batt, Fletcher recommend a high density product to reduce the R-value loss. That may mean increasing the rest of the ceiling insulation to compensate, calculated under AS 3999 Appendix E.

How many packs do I need?

Each pack holds four batts: 2.0 m² of batt in the 430 mm width and 2.69 m² in the 580 mm width. Fletcher's coverage per pack, which allows for the framing, is 2.24 m² and 3.03 m², and their install guide divides the ceiling area by that figure. Allow about 5% for wastage on a simple ceiling and more on a complex one.

Can my ceiling carry R7.0 batts?

Check the plasterboard maker's weight limits first. Where the plasterboard has a load limit under 4 kg/m², Fletcher recommend stringing or taping the frame before installing R7.0 ceiling batts.

Can it be used in a bushfire area?

Yes. Fletcher rate Pink Batts Ceiling for BAL Low through to Flame Zone under AS 3959, and the glasswool is non-combustible to AS/NZS 1530.1.

What clearance do downlights and exhaust fans need?

Leave at least 50 mm side clearance from the body of downlights, exhaust fans and flues unless the fitting's maker states otherwise. Cables covered by bulk insulation may overheat and fail, so install to AS 3999.

Is it a vapour barrier?

No. Fletcher state it cannot be used as a water or vapour barrier, and it is not suitable where high humidity sits inside the building for long periods. Keep it dry before, during and after installation.
