Kooltherm K17 Insulated Plasterboard is Kingspan's dry-lining board: a fibre-free, closed cell phenolic core bonded to 10 mm tapered edge plasterboard, so one sheet insulates and lines the inside face of a wall. Seven thicknesses from 35 to 90 mm, R1.15 to R3.70, made in Australia.
Reading the sizes
Thickness is overall, plasterboard included, so a 35 mm board carries 25 mm of insulation. The option R-value is the board alone. Bonded to 150 mm concrete, Kingspan declare a wall total of RT1.4 at 35 mm up to RT3.8 (heat flow in) at 90 mm, and energy assessments use that total. Our R-value guide explains the difference.
Where it suits
K17 is designed for adhesive bonding to dry brick, block or concrete walls free from moisture penetration, and can also be screwed to masonry, battens or framing. The face is gypsum, so it must not be used to isolate dampness or in continuously damp or humid conditions. It carries a Group 1 NCC fire classification, but Type A and B fire-resisting walls in Class 2 to 9 buildings need a Performance Solution.
Ordering and storage
Boards come in Kingspan's full packs, 12 boards at 35 mm down to 4 at 80 and 90 mm, and each option shows the m² per pack. Every size is made to order, about 10 business days. The 2400 x 1200 mm board comes in all seven thicknesses, the 3000 and 3600 mm lengths in some only. Store packs inside and never fix a wet board. Full figures are in the table below.

Fitting notes
Install to AS 3999:2015, with wiring to AS 3000:2018. For adhesive bonding the wall must be brick, block or concrete, dry, structurally sound and free from oil, grease, paint or release agent. Run a continuous bead of construction adhesive around the wall and ceiling junctions and around openings, then apply dabs about 30 mm across at 300 mm centres both ways, keeping them about 25 mm in from board joints. Tap each board back with a straightedge and keep the vertical edge plumb. Once the adhesive has set, add six mechanical fixings per board, 15 mm in from the edge with a nominal 25 mm embedment into the wall. Where an adhesive bond is not suitable or tiles will go on, fix to the masonry with anchors embedded at least 25 mm and screws at no more than 600 mm horizontal and 300 mm vertical centres. On frames or battens at 600 mm maximum centres, use drywall screws at 300 mm centres, closer at 200 mm on external corners, with 10 mm penetration into metal or 25 mm into timber. Set a 5 mm packer at the base of the wall and replace it with flexible sealant before the skirting goes on. Do not use adhesives containing methyl ethyl ketone. Joint the tapered edges to the plasterboard maker's procedure.
Figures are taken from the Kingspan technical data sheet for Kooltherm K17 Insulated Plasterboard, KIAU0024 Issue 28, October 2024, with compliance details from CodeMark certificate CM20045 and Global GreenTag certificate KIN:KO03:2024:GR, the hazard classification from the Kooltherm safety data sheet KIAU0179 Third Issue, February 2024, and the warranty terms from the Kooltherm product warranty KIAU0190 Sixth Issue, April 2024. Pack quantities, product codes and the 3000 and 3600 mm board lengths come from the supplier's Kingspan product list; the data sheet itself lists the 2400 x 1200 mm board. The manufacturer document is linked above. Kingspan can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.
Common questions
Is the thickness the insulation or the whole board?
The whole board. Each thickness includes the 10 mm plasterboard face, so a 35 mm board is 25 mm of phenolic insulation plus 10 mm of plasterboard.
What R-value does the finished wall get?
The option label shows the board's own R-value, R1.15 at 35 mm up to R3.70 at 90 mm. Bonded to a 150 mm concrete wall, Kingspan declare Total R-values from RT1.4 at 35 mm to RT3.8 heat flow in at 90 mm, and on a 140 mm masonry block wall from RT1.4 to RT3.9. The table below lists every thickness.
Can it go on a damp wall?
No. The face is gypsum plasterboard, and Kingspan say K17 should not be used to isolate dampness or in continuously damp or humid conditions. Adhesive bonding is only for masonry walls free from moisture penetration.
Do I need mechanical fixings as well as adhesive?
Kingspan recommend six mechanical fixings per board once the adhesive has set, 15 mm in from the board edge with a nominal 25 mm embedment into the wall. Boards 3 m and longer also take six.
Can it be used on fire-resisting walls?
It carries a Group 1 NCC fire classification. Kingspan's examples suit Class 1 and 10a housing and Type C fire-resisting walls in Class 2 to 9 buildings. Type A and B walls in those buildings need a Performance Solution.
Is K17 kept in stock?
No. Every size is made to order and takes about 10 business days. It is sold in full packs of 4 to 12 boards, depending on thickness.
How do I cut it?
Use a fine toothed saw, or cut through the insulation and the back paper of the plasterboard with a sharp knife, snap the board face down over a straight edge and cut the face paper. Support the sheet while cutting so it does not break.
