Kooltherm K12 Framing Board in residential batt sizes is Kingspan's 80 mm, R3.60 rigid phenolic insulation, sized to fit between the studs of a timber or steel framed wall. The fibre-free core is faced on both sides with composite foil. Made in Australia.

Choosing the width

Kingspan make 403, 413, 553 and 563 mm widths, all 1200 mm long and 80 mm thick. We sell 403 and 563 mm. Measure the gap between studs first, because Kingspan say to pick the width that best fits the stud frame. Full 2400 x 1200 mm sheets are on the Kooltherm K12 Framing Board page.

What R3.60 means

R3.60 is Kingspan's declared R-value for the 80 mm product at 23 °C: the batt on its own, not a wall total. The data sheet lists it for framed walls in NCC Class 1 houses. For Type A and B walls in multi-storey Class 2 buildings, talk to Kingspan Technical Services first.

Packs and coverage

Six batts to a pack. A 403 mm pack covers 2.90 m² and a 563 mm pack 4.05 m², counting batt face area only. Both widths are stocked.

On site

Fill a gap under the noggin with an offcut and gaps on a vertical edge with HB FulaFoam Pro. Glasswool goes around services. Cut with a fine tooth saw. The foil conducts electricity, so keep it off bare cables. Kingspan require installation to AS 3999:2015 and AS 3000:2018. Wet boards should not be used, so keep the packs dry. Full figures are in the table below.

Fitting notes

Choose the Kingspan width that best fits the stud frame and insert a full size batt into each stud bay. Where a gap is left between the full batt and the noggin above, fill it with an offcut. Fill any gap on a vertical edge with HB FulaFoam Pro, and use glasswool around services and small voids. Cut with a fine toothed saw, or score with a sharp knife, snap over a straight edge and cut the facing on the other side, trimming accurately so the joints butt closely. Kingspan's tool list is a fine tooth hand saw, a square edge to cut against, and one can of foam per home with a foam gun and solvent. The foil facings conduct electricity, so keep them away from un-insulated cables and fittings, and install to AS 3999:2015 and AS 3000:2018. The foil also reflects UV, so wear UV protective glasses when fitting in bright sun. Protect the batts from hot sun and rain until the wall is enclosed by the external cladding.

Figures are taken from the Kingspan data sheet for Kooltherm K12 Framing Board in residential sizes, KIAU0174 Issue 4, April 2025, with the Kooltherm K12 (Residential Batt) Installation Guide, KIAU0171 First Issue, July 2023. Common questions

Which width do I need for my stud frame?

Kingspan make 403, 413, 553 and 563 mm widths and say to choose the one that best fits the stud frame. We sell 403 and 563 mm. Measure the clear gap between your studs and pick the closer fit.

How much wall does one pack cover?

Each pack holds six batts, 1200 mm long. A 403 mm pack covers 2.90 m² and a 563 mm pack covers 4.05 m². That is the face area of the batts, with no allowance for the studs.

Is R3.60 the R-value of the whole wall?

No. R3.60 is Kingspan's declared R-value for the 80 mm product at 23 °C, the batt on its own. The total for the wall is a separate figure for the whole build.

How do I fill the gaps around the batts?

Kingspan's method is an offcut of K12 for the gap between a full batt and the noggin above, HB FulaFoam Pro for gaps on a vertical edge, and glasswool around services and small voids. Their tool list allows one can of foam per home, with a foam gun and solvent.

How do I cut it?

Use a fine toothed saw, or score it with a sharp knife, snap it over a straight edge and cut the facing on the other side. Trim accurately so the joints butt closely.

Can it go in an apartment wall?

Kingspan list it as suitable for framed walls in NCC Class 1 houses. For Type A and B walls in multi-storey Class 2 buildings, contact Kingspan Insulation Technical Services first. Its AS 1530.3:1999 result is Spread of Flame Index 0 and Smoke Development ≤ 3.

Is it safe near electrical wiring?

The foil facings conduct electricity, so keep them away from un-insulated cables and fittings. Kingspan require installation to AS 3999:2015 and AS 3000:2018 (Wiring Rules).

What if the packs get rained on?

Kingspan say boards that have been allowed to get wet should not be used. Store packs inside where you can, or stacked off the ground under an opaque polythene sheet or weatherproof tarpaulin, and keep fitted batts out of sun and rain until the wall is clad.
