Kooltherm K12 is a rigid thermoset phenolic board with composite foil on both faces, for wall insulation in framed construction. CodeMark certified for NCC compliance.
Where a board beats a batt
A batt sits between the studs, so the studs themselves stay as a thermal bridge straight through the wall. A board fixed across the frame covers that path. K12 is used that way, and because phenolic reaches a given R-value in less thickness than most alternatives, it does it without pushing the wall build-up out much.
Sizes
2400 x 1200 mm boards from 25 mm at R1.10 through 30 mm at R1.30, 40 mm at R1.75 and 50 mm at R2.30. Other thicknesses are available on enquiry with minimum order quantities, so ask if the specification calls for something outside the stocked range.
Performance figures
Thermal conductivity 0.022 W/m·K at 45 mm and thicker, spread of flame index 0, smoke development 3 or lower, compressive stress averaging over 100 kPa at 10% compression, and water vapour transmission over 35 MN·s/g. Fibre-free core, 10 year warranty subject to the full Kooltherm terms.

Technical data
Kingspan product data sheet (PDF)Sizes stocked
| Nominal thickness | Declared R-value at 23 °C | Board size |
|---|---|---|
| 25 mm | R1.10 | 2400 x 1200 mm |
| 30 mm | R1.30 | 2400 x 1200 mm |
| 40 mm | R1.75 | 2400 x 1200 mm |
| 50 mm | R2.30 | 2400 x 1200 mm |
Thermal
| Thermal conductivity, 45 mm and thicker | 0.022 W/m·K at 23 °C |
|---|---|
| Thermal conductivity, 25 to 44 mm | 0.023 W/m·K at 23 °C |
| Test standard | AS/NZS 4859.1:2018 and ASTM C518-2017 |
| Emittance, foil face | 0.06 (ASTM C1371) |
Foil on both faces, so an unventilated cavity on either side of the board adds to the total wall R-value on top of the board's own figure. That is how it gets a 7 Star wall out of a shallow stud.

Fitting notes
Goes on the framing as a continuous layer rather than between the studs, so it covers the timber or steel and cuts the thermal bridge the frame would otherwise create. Butt the boards and tape the joints so the cavity behind stays sealed, because a leaking cavity loses the reflective benefit. Cut with a fine tooth saw. Keep the boards dry and out of the sun before they are covered.

Common questions
What sizes are stocked and how much does each one cover?
4 options are stocked, running from 25 mm to 50 mm. The table above lists each one with the coverage or quantity you get.
What thermal performance does it have?
Thermal conductivity, 45 mm and thicker: 0.022 W/m·K at 23 °C. Thermal conductivity, 25 to 44 mm: 0.023 W/m·K at 23 °C. Emittance, foil face: 0.06 (ASTM C1371). Thermal rating: Declared to AS/NZS 4859.1:2018.
How does it perform in a fire?
Spread of flame index: 0. Smoke development: 3 or lower. Smoke obscuration: 100 m²/kg or lower.
How does it handle moisture?
Water vapour transmission: Over 35 MN·s/g (ASTM E96).
Does it meet Australian standards?
Test standard: AS/NZS 4859.1:2018 and ASTM C518-2017. Certification: CodeMark certified for NCC compliance. Warranty: 10 years, residential and commercial, subject to the full Kooltherm warranty terms.
How is it installed?
