Kingspan Kooltherm K12 Framing Board is a rigid thermoset phenolic board with composite foil on both faces, for wall insulation behind wall lining and in framed walls. CodeMark certified for NCC compliance.
Where a board beats a batt
A batt sits between the studs, so the studs stay as a thermal bridge through the wall. A board fixed across the frame covers that path. Kingspan list K12 for use between studs or as an insulating sheathing, and say it can eliminate cold bridging.
Sizes and packs
2400 x 1200 mm boards in six thicknesses: 25 mm R1.10, 30 mm R1.30, 40 mm R1.75, 45 mm R2.05, 50 mm R2.30 and 80 mm R3.60. Sold in Kingspan's full packs, from 12 boards (34.56 m²) at 25 mm to 4 boards (11.52 m²) at 80 mm. The 45 and 80 mm boards are made to order and take about 10 business days. Kingspan state the 80 mm is intended for residential applications.
Wall Total R-values
Kingspan's wall Total R-values cover the 25, 30, 40 and 50 mm boards only. For 45 or 80 mm, get a figure from Kingspan before an energy report relies on it. Our Kooltherm board guide sets out the tables.
Performance figures
Thermal conductivity 0.022 W/m·K at 45 mm and thicker, spread of flame index 0, smoke development 3 or lower, compressive stress averaging over 100 kPa at 10% compression, and water vapour transmission over 35 MN·s/g. Fibre-free core, 10 year warranty subject to the full Kooltherm terms.

Thermal
| Thermal conductivity, 45 mm and thicker | 0.022 W/m·K at 23 °C |
|---|---|
| Thermal conductivity, 25 to 44 mm | 0.023 W/m·K at 23 °C |
| Test standard | AS/NZS 4859.1:2018 and ASTM C518-2017 |
| Emittance, foil face | E0.06 (ASTM C1371:2015) |
| Published Total R-values | Five wall constructions, for the 25, 30, 40 and 50 mm boards (clip and channel table 25 to 40 mm). None for 45 or 80 mm |
The foil faces improve the thermal resistance of an unventilated cavity next to the board, so the wall's Total R-value depends on the build-up either side.

Fitting notes
On a frame keep studs at no more than 600 mm centres, land the vertical board joints on a stud and butt the boards lightly. In brick veneer fit a retaining clip or disc on each wall tie and keep a clear cavity of at least 25 mm between the board and the brickwork, or 40 mm under CodeMark certificate CM20047, with the cavity no wider than 75 mm. On the clip and channel system over concrete, Kingspan call taping the joins with 48 mm reinforced aluminium foil tape best practice. Cut with a fine toothed saw, or score with a sharp knife, snap over a straight edge and cut the facing on the other side. Protect the boards from hot sun and rain until they are enclosed, and do not use boards that have got wet or adhesives containing methyl ethyl ketone. The foil conducts electricity, so keep it clear of un-insulated cables and fittings. Install to AS 3999:2015 and AS 3000:2018.
Figures are taken from the Kingspan Kooltherm K12 Framing Board data sheet, KIAU0057 Issue 17, November 2024, with the 40 mm brick veneer cavity from CodeMark certificate CM20047. Boards per pack follow Kingspan's pack quantities. The manufacturer document is linked above. Kingspan can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.
Common questions
How many boards are in a pack?
It depends on the thickness: 12 boards at 25 mm, 10 at 30 mm, 8 at 40 mm, 7 at 45 mm, 6 at 50 mm and 4 at 80 mm. Every board is 2400 x 1200 mm (2.88 m²), so a pack covers from 34.56 m² down to 11.52 m².
Can I buy single boards?
No. K12 is sold in Kingspan's full packs, and each size lists its board count and coverage.
Which thicknesses are made to order?
The 45 mm and 80 mm boards are made to order and take about 10 business days. The 25, 30, 40 and 50 mm boards are stocked.
What R-value will the wall actually get?
The board itself is declared at R1.10 (25 mm) to R3.60 (80 mm). The wall total depends on the construction: at 40 mm Kingspan give RT3.3 heat flow in for brick veneer and RT2.0 for a Type C wall on concrete. Kingspan publish wall totals for the 25, 30, 40 and 50 mm boards only.
How wide a cavity does brick veneer need?
The data sheet asks for a clear cavity of at least 25 mm between the board and the brickwork, with the cavity no wider than 75 mm. CodeMark certificate CM20047 sets the minimum at 40 mm, so plan for 40 mm where the job relies on the certificate.
Can K12 go into Type A or Type B construction?
Kingspan's examples suit NCC Class 1 and 10a housing and Type C walls in Class 2 to 9 buildings. Type A and B walls in Class 2 to 9 buildings need a Performance Solution.
Do the joints need taping?
On the clip and channel system over concrete, Kingspan call taping the joins with 48 mm wide reinforced aluminium foil tape best practice. On framed walls the data sheet asks for vertical joints on a stud and boards lightly butted.
