Ametalin ThermalCav Drainage Battens do two jobs with one strip. 20 mm of high density polypropylene and XPE gives an R0.26 thermal break and a 20 mm drained, ventilated cavity at the same time. 45 mm x 1.2 m, pack of 25.
One product instead of two
A steel frame under the NCC 2022 rules needs an R0.2 thermal break, and a modern wall or roof build-up usually wants a 20 mm ventilated cavity as well. Doing that with a thermal break strip plus a separate batten means two products, two fixing operations and a stack-up you have to think about. ThermalCav is both at once, at R0.26 in situ, which clears R0.2 with margin.
The 20 mm matters
NCC 2022 Volume One F8D5 and J4D3, and Housing Provisions 10.8.3 and 13.2.2, are the clauses that drive air gaps and ventilation in these assemblies. 20 mm in one piece removes the doubling up you would otherwise do with a 10 mm batten.
Fix straight through it
Compression resistance is 497 kPa over a 50 x 50 mm area and it takes normal foot traffic. Fixings are meant to pass through the batten into the framing behind, so adjust screw length for the extra 20 mm. It cuts, drills and screws without splitting.
Under a metal roof
It holds the sheet off the sarking, so the dew point stays on the underside of the roof cladding and the cavity ventilates it away rather than letting condensation form on the membrane.
On site
Self adhesive, no temporary fixings. Clean dry framing, peel the liner, centre it on the member, press it home, cladding straight after. Termite, mould and mildew resistant, UV and fire rated, long term heat resistance 90 degrees.

Fitting notes
Install to the exterior side of the structural or steel framing after the pliable building membrane is on, to AS 4200.2:2017, and fit the cladding at the same time. Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease and oil. Peel the release liner, centre the batten on the framing member and press firmly. Fixings pass through the batten into the framing behind, so adjust fixing length for the extra 20 mm. Runs vertically or horizontally.

Common questions
Does it replace a separate thermal break strip?
Yes, on a steel frame. R0.26 in situ clears the NCC 2022 R0.2 requirement, and you get the 20 mm ventilated cavity in the same operation.
How is it different from Cavity Drainage Battens?
Thickness and R-value. Cavity Drainage Battens are 10 mm at R0.15, which is below the R0.2 thermal break figure. ThermalCav is 20 mm at R0.26.
Do the cladding screws go through it?
Yes, straight through into the framing behind. Add 20 mm to your fixing length so the screw still reaches the required embedment.
Will it crush under the cladding?
Compression resistance is 497 kPa over a 50 x 50 mm area and it takes normal foot traffic during install.
How much frame does a pack cover?
25 battens at 1.2 m is 30 m of framing member. On a 2.4 m wall that is two per stud, so about 12 studs per pack.
Can I use it on a roof?
Yes. Under a metal roof it holds the sheet off the sarking so the dew point stays on the underside of the cladding and the cavity ventilates it.
