Ametalin Cavity Drainage Battens are triple layer high density polypropylene strips with an open air flow core and a self adhesive back. They hold the cladding 10 mm off the membrane so the cavity can drain and ventilate. 45 mm x 1.2 m x 10 mm, pack of 50.
What a drained cavity actually buys you
Cladding fixed hard against a wall wrap has nowhere for incidental water to go and no air movement to dry it. A batten turns that contact into a cavity, and the cavity does three jobs at once: it drains, it ventilates, and it separates the cladding from the frame thermally. On a metal roof it also keeps the dew point on the underside of the roof sheet rather than on the membrane, which is where the drips come from.
Strong enough to fix through
Compression resistance is 500 kPa, it takes normal foot traffic, and it resists impact from cladding installation and screw pull. Thermal resistance is R0.15 in situ, and long term heat resistance is 90 degrees.
Double up for 20 mm
Two thicknesses give a 20 mm gap, which is what the NCC 2022 air gap and ventilation provisions call for in Volume One F8D5 and J4D3 and Housing Provisions 10.8.3 and 13.2.2. If you want 20 mm in one piece and a full R0.2 thermal break, use ThermalCav Drainage Battens instead.

No temporary fixings needed. Clean and dry the framing, peel the liner, centre the batten on the member, press it home by hand and get the cladding on without delay. Runs vertically or horizontally. Termite, mould and mildew resistant, and UV and fire rated.

Ametalin state the 10 mm thickness allows a double thickness to make 20 mm air gaps and reflective spaces for these requirements.
Fitting notes
Install to the exterior side of the framing after the pliable building membrane is on, to AS 4200.2:2017, and fit the cladding at the same time. Locate the framing member, make sure the surface is clean, dry and free of dirt, grease and oil, peel the release liner, centre the batten parallel to the member and press firmly by hand for maximum contact. Install the cladding without delay. Runs vertically or horizontally.

Common questions
Is this a structural batten?
No. Ametalin describe it as a non-structural cavity spacer. It holds the cladding off the membrane and carries the cladding fixings through into the framing behind it.
Do I need fixings to hold the batten on?
No. The high tack adhesive back holds it while you work, which is the point of the product. The cladding fixings then go through into the structural member.
How do I get a 20 mm cavity?
Either apply two thicknesses, which Ametalin state is acceptable, or use ThermalCav Drainage Battens which are 20 mm in one piece and give R0.26.
Does it count as a thermal break?
It gives R0.15 in situ, which is below the R0.2 the NCC asks for as a steel frame thermal break. If R0.2 is the requirement, use a ThermalBreak Strip or ThermalCav.
How much wall does a pack cover?
50 battens at 1.2 m is 60 m of framing member. On a 2.4 m wall that is two per stud, so about 25 studs.
Can it be walked on during install?
Ametalin state it withstands normal foot traffic and resists impact from cladding installation and screw pull, at 500 kPa compression resistance.
Why does it help with condensation under a metal roof?
It lifts the roof sheet off the membrane, so the dew point sits on the underside of the sheet where the cavity can ventilate it, rather than on top of the sarking.
