Insulation is light and very bulky, and that one fact drives everything about how it arrives. A pack that weighs almost nothing still takes up the space of a fridge, so freight is priced on the room it occupies rather than the weight, and a large order needs a truck, somewhere dry to put it, and a plan for getting it off. Sort those three before you order and delivery stops being the problem.
In short
- We deliver in Victoria and New South Wales. $55 in metro Melbourne and metro Sydney, $99 in the outer suburbs, $149 anywhere else.
- Most orders are dispatched the same day, with metro delivery about 1 to 3 business days after that.
- Bulk matters more than weight. Larger orders go by freight rather than parcel.
- For big or commercial quantities, get a freight quote before you order.
- Tell us if it is a residential address. It changes the truck and the unload.
- Have somewhere dry. Wet glasswool is replaced, not dried.
This is the part of the job nobody plans for and everybody remembers. It is worth ten minutes before you place the order.
Why bulk decides everything
Insulation is one of the few building products where the weight is almost irrelevant and the volume is everything.
A pack of ceiling batts is light enough for one person to carry and takes the space of a small appliance. Multiply that by a house and you have a load that fills a van but barely troubles the weight limit. That is why freight for insulation is generally driven by the space it occupies rather than what it weighs, and why the freight on a large order can look surprising next to the product cost.
Two practical consequences follow, and both are worth knowing before you buy:
- Higher R-value means more volume. A thicker batt gives less coverage per pack, so a high R specification is more packs and more freight for the same ceiling area, not just a dearer pack.
- Compressed packing is doing real work. Many products are compression packed and expand once released, which is what makes them shippable at all.
Dispatch and delivery times
| Stage | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Processing | Most orders are processed the same day |
| Dispatch | We do our best to get most items out on the next business day |
| Metro delivery | Around 1 to 3 business days after dispatch |
| Regional | We ship to metro and most regional areas in Victoria and New South Wales, with longer transit |
| Tracking | Confirmation on dispatch and, where available, tracking |
Those are the ordinary cases. Two things change them: a bulky order that has to go on freight rather than a parcel network, and a product that is not a stocked line. If either applies to your order we will tell you at the quote rather than after you have paid.
The delivery charge is per order and set by postcode: $55 in metro Melbourne and metro Sydney (within 41.5 km of the Melbourne CBD or about 41 km of Parramatta), $99 in the outer ring (out to 100 km from Melbourne or about 81 km from Parramatta), and $149 anywhere else in Victoria and New South Wales. Put the address in at checkout and the rate for that postcode shows straight away.
Parcel or freight
Where the line falls between a parcel and a freight consignment is mostly about volume, and it changes what the delivery looks like at your end.
| Parcel | Freight | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical order | A few packs, accessories, tapes, fixings | A house lot, a shed, a commercial roof package |
| Vehicle | Van or courier | Rigid truck or semi trailer |
| Unload | Driver hands it over | Tail lift, forklift, or hand unload with someone there |
| Access needed | Ordinary street access | Room to get a truck in and turn it around |
| Booking | Straightforward | Usually a delivery window, and someone on site |
The commonest surprise is a suburban driveway meeting a semi trailer. It is entirely avoidable, and the way to avoid it is to say what the address is when you order.
Site access, and what to tell us
Five things let us book the right vehicle first time.
- Is it residential or commercial? This alone changes the truck.
- Can a large truck get in and turn around? Narrow streets, low branches, tight driveways and steep entries all matter.
- Is there a forklift on site? If yes, a pallet delivery is quick. If not, plan for a hand unload.
- Will someone be there? Freight deliveries are not left at the door, and a failed delivery is a redelivery charge.
- Is there a delivery window? Many commercial sites, strata buildings and estates have one.
None of that is unusual, but every one of them has held up a delivery at some point, and all of them are answerable in a sentence.
Storage on site
This is where good orders go wrong, and it is entirely preventable.
- It needs to be dry. Glasswool that gets rained on before it goes up loses its loft and does not recover, so it is replaced rather than dried. Wet insulation installed into a roof is a problem you then build in permanently.
- It needs more room than you think. A house lot of ceiling batts is a garage full, not a corner of one.
- Keep it off the ground. Concrete sweats and a slab in a new build is often damp.
- Keep it out of the wind. A 1200 mm roll is a sail, and loose packs travel.
- Keep the foil clear of wiring. Foil facings conduct electricity, and stacked rolls end up in odd places on a live site.
Staging a large order
On a commercial job or a big house, one delivery of everything is rarely the right answer.
The roof package has a hard deadline, because blanket, mesh, spacers and thermal break all go on before the sheets. Wall and ceiling insulation is more forgiving and can follow the build. If the site cannot store the whole job dry, we can split the delivery to match the program so the roof material arrives for the roofing crew and the rest comes at lock up.
Tell us the program when you order rather than after the first truck arrives, and it costs nothing to arrange.
What to check on arrival
- Product and R-value on the label match the order, including the facing type where it matters.
- Pack or roll count matches the docket. Count before the truck leaves.
- Nothing is wet or torn. Note it on the docket if it is.
- The right widths. 430 and 580 mm are the common wall and ceiling widths, and underfloor batts are narrower again.
- Keep the product data sheets. On a job with a certifier, the built work gets compared against them.
Pickup and freight quotes
Two things worth knowing before you order.
Local pickup from Epping, Victoria may be available by arrangement. Get in touch before ordering so we can confirm availability and a time.
Freight quotes are the right move on anything large. For big or commercial quantities, tell us what you need and we will sort the freight option before you place the order, which avoids both the surprise and the wrong truck. The current detail is on our shipping information page.
We supply it, and we install batts, wall wrap and sarking
AWBM delivers insulation and building materials across Victoria and New South Wales, from a single pack to a full commercial roof package, and we install batts, wall wrap and sarking. Send the areas, the R-values and the site address and we will come back with quantities, a freight option and a delivery plan.
Or browse ceiling, roofing blankets and commercial insulation.
Frequently asked questions
How long does delivery take in Victoria and New South Wales?
Most orders are processed the same day and we do our best to dispatch most items on the next business day. For most metro areas, allow around 1 to 3 business days for delivery after dispatch. Regional and freight consignments take longer.
Do you deliver to residential addresses?
Yes, but tell us at the order stage. A pallet delivery needs different access to a small parcel, and it changes how the freight is booked and how the unload works.
Why is freight on insulation more than I expected?
Because insulation is light but very bulky, so freight is driven by the space the order takes up rather than its weight. An ordinary order pays the set charge for its postcode, $55, $99 or $149. Volume shows up on a large order quoted as freight, and a high R-value specification means more packs for the same area, and more volume again.
Do I need a forklift on site?
For pallet quantities it makes the delivery much faster. If there is no forklift, say so and the delivery can be planned for a hand unload, which takes longer and needs someone available to receive it.
Can I pick up instead of having it delivered?
Local pickup from Epping, Victoria may be available by arrangement. Get in touch before you order so we can confirm availability and a pickup time.
Can a large order be delivered in stages?
Yes. On a big job we can split the delivery to the program, which matters when the site cannot store the whole order dry. The roof package is the one with a fixed deadline, because it has to be on site before the roof is sheeted.
What happens if the insulation gets wet before it is installed?
It is replaced rather than dried. Glasswool that has been soaked loses its loft and does not recover its rated R-value, and installing it puts a moisture problem permanently into the building.
What should I check when the delivery arrives?
That the product, R-value, facing type and widths match the order, that the pack count matches the docket, and that nothing is wet or torn. Note any damage on the docket before the truck leaves, and keep the product data sheets.
How do I get a freight quote?
Tell us what you need and the delivery address before you place the order, and we will arrange the right freight option. That is the recommended step for anything large or commercial.
