Trade Select ThermalLiner is a foil faced XPE foam roll for roofs and walls, 1500 mm by 20 m covering 30 m², over a 4 mm closed cell foam core with aluminium foil laminated to a polymer weave on both faces.
Where the R-value comes from
The material R-value is 0.11 m²K/W, stated as RM 0.1. That number on its own is not what makes a reflective product work. The performance comes from the foil facing an air cavity, so the bright face has to go into the cavity and the cavity has to stay clear. Dust settling on an upward facing foil surface cuts the reflective performance over time, which is why the orientation and the detailing matter more here than the thickness. Blanket, sarking or batts sets out where a reflective product belongs against bulk insulation, and why one rarely replaces the other.
The quiet benefit on a shed
The foam core also dampens drumming on a metal roof. On a shed or garage that is often the difference people notice first, ahead of the temperature. Why metal sheds and garages get so hot goes through the options.
On site
Run it with the bright foil face into the air cavity. Keep the cavity clear. The foil conducts electricity, so keep it clear of wiring during installation.

Technical data
Ametalin technical data sheet (PDF)Sizes stocked
| Roll size | Area per roll | Foam core |
|---|---|---|
| 1500 mm x 20 m | 30 m² | 4 mm |
Thermal
| Material R-value | 0.11 m²K/W, stated as RM 0.1 (ASTM C518) |
|---|---|
| Emittance | 0.05 anti-glare side, 0.03 bright side, IR reflective, category RR |
| Reflectivity | 95% one side, 97% the other |
The material R-value is only part of what you get. Most of the performance comes from the reflective face working into an air cavity, so the total system R-value is the number that matters on a job.
Moisture and air control
| Vapour control | Class 1 vapour barrier (ASTM E96) |
|---|---|
| Vapour permeance | 0.001 µg/N·s |
| Water control | Water barrier (AS/NZS 4201.4) |
| Air control | Air barrier |
Class 1 is the tightest vapour barrier grade, so put it on the warm side of the structure for your climate zone or you can trap moisture instead of stopping it.
Classification
| Duty | Extra Heavy (AS/NZS 4200.1:2017) |
|---|---|
| Electrical conductivity | Electrically conductive |
| Flammability classification | Low, 5 or lower (AS 1530.2) |
Strength and durability
| Tensile strength, machine direction | 15.9 kN/m (minimum 9.5) |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength, lateral direction | 14.6 kN/m (minimum 6.0) |
| Edge tear, machine direction | 666 N (minimum 65) |
| Edge tear, lateral direction | 606 N (minimum 65) |
| Shrinkage | 0.0%, well inside the 0.5% limit |
| Dry and wet delamination | Pass (AS/NZS 4201.1 and 4201.2) |
Build-up
| Core | 4 mm chemically cross-linked closed cell high density XPE foam |
|---|---|
| Faces | Polymer weave with aluminium foil laminated to each side |
| Lamination | Polymer adhesive that stays tacky, for resistance to heat and delamination |
Fitting notes
Run it with the bright foil face into the air cavity, since that is where the reflective R-value is earned. Keep the cavity clear, because dust settling on an upward facing foil surface cuts the performance over time. The foam core also dampens drumming noise on a metal roof, which is a real benefit on a shed. The foil conducts electricity, so keep it clear of wiring.

Common questions
What sizes are stocked and how much does each one cover?
It is stocked in one option, 1500 mm x 20 m. The table above lists the coverage or quantity you get.
What thermal performance does it have?
Material R-value: 0.11 m²K/W, stated as RM 0.1 (ASTM C518). Emittance: 0.05 anti-glare side, 0.03 bright side, IR reflective, category RR. Electrical conductivity: Electrically conductive.
How does it handle moisture?
Vapour control: Class 1 vapour barrier (ASTM E96). Vapour permeance: 0.001 µg/N·s. Water control: Water barrier (AS/NZS 4201.4). Dry and wet delamination: Pass (AS/NZS 4201.1 and 4201.2).
Does it meet Australian standards?
Flammability classification: Low, 5 or lower (AS 1530.2).
How is it installed?
Run it with the bright foil face into the air cavity, since that is where the reflective R-value is earned. Keep the cavity clear, because dust settling on an upward facing foil surface cuts the performance over time.
