Trade Select SilverFloor is a double sided reflective foil underfloor insulation, 97% reflective on both faces, in 500 mm and 1500 mm wide rolls of 60 m.

Enclosing the sub-floor is the big lever

The system figures make it plain. In an enclosed unventilated sub-floor Ametalin quotes RT 3.36 in winter and 1.52 in summer. In an unenclosed ventilated sub-floor the same product gives RT 2.05 and 0.77. If the sub-floor can be enclosed, that decision changes the result more than anything else you can specify.

Built for the conditions under a floor

It has 5 mm weep holes at 400 mm intervals, so water that does get onto it can drain rather than pool. It is Class 3 vapour permeable and deliberately not a water barrier or air barrier, because under a floor you want moisture to be able to move rather than be trapped against the structure.

Tough enough to work with

Heavy duty to AS/NZS 4200.1:2017, with edge tear of 439 N and 452 N against an 80 N minimum, and UV resistance up to 90 days. Sub-floor work is awkward and the membrane takes a beating going in.

Which width

The 500 mm roll covers 30 m² and suits working between joists single handed. The 1500 mm roll covers 90 m² for open runs. It is electrically conductive, so keep it clear of wiring.

Total system R-value

Enclosed unventilated sub-floor, winter RT 3.36
Enclosed unventilated sub-floor, summer RT 1.52
Unenclosed ventilated sub-floor, winter RT 2.05
Unenclosed ventilated sub-floor, summer RT 0.77

System values under NCC 2019 with SilverFloor installed between joists or over bearers, calculated by an independent engineer to AS/NZS 4859.2. An enclosed sub-floor gives roughly 60% more winter R-value than a ventilated one, which is worth knowing before you frame.

Classification

Duty Heavy (AS/NZS 4200.1:2017)
Emittance 0.03 both faces, IR reflective, category RR
Reflectivity 97% reflective aluminium foil on both sides
Vapour control Class 3 vapour permeable, 0.3009 µg/N·s (ASTM E96)
Water control Non-water barrier
Air control Non-air barrier
Electrical conductivity Conductive
Drainage 5 mm weep holes at 400 mm intervals

The weep holes are deliberate. They let water and vapour pass through instead of pooling on top of the membrane under the flooring.

Strength and durability

Tensile strength, machine direction 12.8 kN/m (minimum 12.5)
Tensile strength, lateral direction 14.2 kN/m (minimum 7.5)
Edge tear, machine direction 439 N (minimum 80)
Edge tear, lateral direction 452 N (minimum 80)
UV resistance Up to 90 days
Shrinkage 0.0%, well inside the 0.5% limit
Dry and wet delamination Pass (AS/NZS 4201.1 and 4201.2)

Fire

Flammability classification Low, 5 or lower (AS 1530.2)

Build-up

Layers Aluminium foil, polymer adhesive, polymer film, woven polymer, polymer adhesive, aluminium foil
Lamination Polymer adhesive that stays tacky, for resistance to heat and delamination

Fitting notes

Goes under a floor that is fixed straight down to the joists, with a sealed air space between the flooring and the sub-floor. Both faces are reflective, so it works whichever way up it goes, but it does need that air space to give you the R-value. If the sub-floor is open to wind, as in pole construction, line under the joists first. The foil conducts electricity, so keep it clear of wiring.

Common questions

What sizes are stocked and how much does each one cover?

2 options are stocked, running from SF-30 to SF-90. The table above lists each one with the coverage or quantity you get.

What thermal performance does it have?

Emittance: 0.03 both faces, IR reflective, category RR. Electrical conductivity: Conductive.

How does it handle moisture?

Vapour control: Class 3 vapour permeable, 0.3009 µg/N·s (ASTM E96). Water control: Non-water barrier. Dry and wet delamination: Pass (AS/NZS 4201.1 and 4201.2).

Does it meet Australian standards?

Flammability classification: Low, 5 or lower (AS 1530.2).

How is it installed?

Goes under a floor that is fixed straight down to the joists, with a sealed air space between the flooring and the sub-floor. Both faces are reflective, so it works whichever way up it goes, but it does need that air space to give you the R-value. If the sub-floor is open to wind, as in pole construction, line under the joists first. The foil conducts electricity, so keep it clear of wiring.
