Thermotec NuWrap 5 is an acoustic pipe lagging made in Sydney. A 5 kg/m² mass loaded visco-elastic barrier does the sound blocking, 25 mm of convoluted foam decouples it from the pipe, and a reinforced aluminium foil facing handles the fire side. Available as a pre-cut sheet sized for 100 mm pipe, or as a 3 m roll at 1350 mm to cut yourself.

Why waste pipes get lagged

The noise from a soil stack is not airborne noise leaking through a wall. It is water hitting the pipe wall and the pipe radiating that as sound into the room next to it, which is why a heavier wall lining on its own does not fix it. Mass on the pipe, decoupled from the pipe, is what does.

What the testing shows

In the RWDI comparison test a bare pipe behind an Rw+Ctr 40 wall measured 37.7 dBA LAmax. The same pipe lagged with NuWrap 5 measured 36.0. On that basis, treating wastewater pipework with NuWrap 5 plus a 10 mm plasterboard ceiling complies with section F7F1 of NCC 2022 Volume One.

Fire and air quality

Early fire hazard indices to AS/NZS 1530.3 are 0 for ignitability, 0 for spread of flame, 0 for heat evolved and 0 to 1 for smoke developed on the foil faced product. VOC emission is at or below 0.5 mg/m² per hour, and it is fibre free, which matters where the lagging sits above a ceiling that will be worked on again.

Sheet or roll

The 490 x 1350 mm sheet is cut to wrap a 100 mm pipe with the lap already allowed for, so there is no measuring on site. The 1350 x 3 m roll is the one to buy for mixed pipe sizes, ductwork or a run of fittings.

On site

It is highly flexible, so it works in the tight spaces where waste pipes actually run. Continuous service range is minus 40 to plus 100 degrees, intermittent to 120. Full figures are in the table below.

Fitting notes

Wrap the foam face to the pipe so the foam decouples the mass layer from the pipe wall, and lap and seal the seam. The cut sheet already allows the lap for a 100 mm pipe. Keep the lagging continuous past brackets and fittings, because a short unlagged section undoes most of the benefit. Follow the Thermotec installation guide for the seam and end details.

Common questions

Which way round does it go on the pipe?

Foam side to the pipe. The convoluted foam decouples the mass layer from the pipe wall, and that decoupling is what makes the mass work. Foil to the pipe would defeat it.

Does it give me an Rw rating?

No, and be careful with anyone who says it does. Thermotec publish a comparative test: 37.7 dBA LAmax for a bare pipe against 36.0 dBA lagged, in the same wall. Rw belongs to the wall system, not to the lagging.

Does it meet the NCC for waste pipes?

On the basis of that comparative test, NuWrap 5 with a 10 mm plasterboard ceiling complies with section F7F1 of NCC 2022 Volume One. The whole assembly has to be built as tested.

Which one do I need for a 100 mm soil pipe?

The 490 x 1350 mm cut sheet. It is sized for 100 mm pipe with the lap allowed, so there is no measuring or offcut waste.

Can I use it on ductwork?

Yes. Thermotec list waste pipes, ductwork and mechanical services. Buy the 1350 x 3 m roll and cut to suit.

Is it fibre free?

Yes. That matters where the lagging sits above a ceiling that other trades will work in later.

How much does one roll cover?

1350 mm x 3 m is 4.05 m² before laps. As a rough guide, a 100 mm pipe takes about 0.5 m² per metre of run once the lap is allowed.
