Kingspan Thermakraft Thermaflash is a self-adhering window flashing tape, sold here as a 150 mm x 23 m roll. It flashes window and door openings and other wall penetrations on timber and steel framed buildings, and bonds to most building surfaces and wall membranes.
Which width you need
Kingspan specify 150 mm tape for 100 mm wide window or door framing. Their method also calls for 75 mm Thermaflash, for the butterfly strips and for a mandatory second layer along the full sill. We list only the 150 mm roll, so ask us about the 75 mm before ordering.
What it does, and its limits
It goes over the wall wrap and exposed frame as a secondary weather resistant barrier, and seals the head flashing upstand to the wrap. Kingspan state it is not designed to overcome poor detailing and workmanship. Check your window sealant for bonding strength and chemical compatibility. Do not leave it exposed to weather or UV for more than 180 days. It complies with AAMA 711-13 and is designed for membranes that meet AS 4200.1:2017.
On site
Cut the wrap at 45 degrees from each corner, fold the flaps in and staple them to the back faces of the framing. For the sill piece, add 400 mm to the sill length to leave a 200 mm upstand each side. Press it on firmly over clean surfaces above -10 °C. On LOSP treated timber, Kingspan recommend at least 7 days for the solvent to flash off. Full figures are in the table below.

Material and durability
| Construction | Synthetic backing and adhesive |
|---|---|
| Bond | Most building surfaces and wall membranes |
| Framing | Timber and steel framed buildings |
| Membrane compatibility | Kingspan Thermakraft building membranes |
| Serviceable life | Equal to that of the cladding, provided the tape is not exposed to weather or UV for more than 180 days or damaged on installation |
| Warranty | Standard Kingspan Insulation warranty |
The serviceable life assumes the cladding is maintained to its maker's instructions and stays weather resistant.
Limits of use
| Weather and UV exposure | No more than 180 days |
|---|---|
| Installation temperature | Above -10 °C |
| LOSP or solvent treated timber | Unaffected once the solvent has flashed off in a well ventilated area, recommended minimum 7 days |
| Window sealants | Installer to check bonding strength and chemical compatibility with the tape before installation |
| Rigid air barrier or rigid wall sheathing | Follow that supplier's flashing tape instructions and confirm with them that Thermaflash is compatible and warranted with their system |
| Medium or high rise buildings | Designer or specifier to include Thermaflash in the external wall cladding system design |
Kingspan state the tape is not designed to overcome poor detailing and workmanship of the window or door joinery installation.

AS 4200.1 is the standard for the membrane the tape goes onto.
Fitting notes
Fit Thermaflash to the method in Kingspan's data sheet. Cut the wall wrap at 45 degrees away from each corner of the opening, fold the flaps tightly into the opening and staple them to the back faces of the framing. Fix Thermakraft corner moulds to the bottom corners, or without them fit 75 mm x 100 mm butterfly strips first, at 45 degrees across the sill corners with a 3 mm overlap. Cut the sill piece 400 mm longer than the sill for a 200 mm upstand each side, line its back edge up with the inside edge of the sill and press it tightly into the corners. Then run a second layer of 75 mm tape along the full sill, flush with the exterior face. Tape the top corners 200 mm across the lintel and 200 mm down the jamb, with a 75 mm butterfly at each lintel to jamb junction. Apply firm pressure on clean surfaces free of dust, oils and waxes, above -10 °C. On difficult to bond substrates Kingspan allow a light coat of Scotch Super 77 spray adhesive, left until tacky. Do not leave the tape exposed to weather or UV for more than 180 days.

Common questions
Which width do I need?
Kingspan use 150 mm tape for 100 mm wide window or door framing. Their method also needs 75 mm Thermaflash for the butterfly strips and the second sill layer, and this page lists the 150 mm roll only.
Is the second layer along the sill really required?
Yes. Kingspan make a second layer of 75 mm Thermaflash along the full length of the sill mandatory, fitted flush with the exterior face, so nail penetrations through horizontal surfaces self-seal.
How long can it be left exposed before the cladding goes on?
No more than 180 days of weather or UV exposure. Kingspan expect a serviceable life equal to the cladding only if the tape stays within that limit and is not damaged on installation.
Can it go on LOSP treated frames?
Yes. Kingspan say it is unaffected by LOSP or other solvent based treated timber once the solvent has flashed off in a well ventilated area, and they recommend at least 7 days.
What is the lowest temperature it can be installed in?
The data sheet says to install it when temperatures are above -10 °C.
Will my window sealant stick to it?
Most window sealants bond directly to Thermaflash, according to Kingspan. The installer still has to check the bonding strength and chemical compatibility of the sealant with the tape before installation.
Does it suit steel frames and rigid air barriers?
It suits timber and steel framed buildings. Over a rigid air barrier or rigid wall sheathing, follow that supplier's flashing tape instructions and confirm with them that Thermaflash is compatible and covered by their warranty.
