Roof Razor is a galvanised steel spacer that sits on the purlin and holds the roof sheet clear of it, so the blanket underneath keeps its full thickness right across the support. It is 1200 mm long, which matches a standard blanket width. Fletcher makes it in four versions.

Which version

  • Standard, pre-loaded screws. For metal purlins in wind regions A and B, with six 12g 14TPI Class 4 screws already fitted. 60, 85 or 115 mm.
  • Standard, without pre-loaded screws. The version for timber battens, in 85 or 115 mm. Fletcher recommends screws 62 mm long plus the penetration depth for the 85 mm, and 92 mm plus the penetration depth for the 115 mm.
  • Cyclonic, pre-loaded screws. For wind regions C and D. It carries an extra steel batten insert and comes with six 14g 10TPI Class 4 screws fitted. 60, 85 or 115 mm.
  • Metal roof cyclonic, without pre-loaded screws. 115 mm only.

Why a spacer changes the numbers

Insulation crushed flat at the purlin is where most of the heat crosses a metal roof. A blanket rated at R2.5 that gets squeezed to nothing every 1200 mm is not delivering R2.5 across the roof, and no amount of extra thickness fixes that on its own. The spacer keeps the blanket at full loft over the support, which is the whole point of specifying one. Roofing blanket R-values explains the gap between the number on the roll and the number the roof achieves.

Picking the height

Choose from the blanket you are using, not from the roof pitch. The 60 mm spacer suits 75 to 80 mm blanket and the 85 mm suits 100 to 120 mm. For 130 to 145 mm blanket, use the 115 mm. Six pieces per pack gives 7.2 lineal metres.

Before you order

Check the purlin and the pitch. The standard spacer needs a minimum 1.2 BMT purlin and the cyclonic one 1.5 BMT, both with a full 50 mm flat surface, because a narrower flange will not take the fixing pattern. Fletcher rates Roof Razor for roof pitches up to and including 30 degrees. It is designed for metal purlins. On timber battens or trusses, Fletcher asks for a structural engineer at design stage.

Dead load capacity is 205 kg between the legs regardless of span, and the spacer is steel, so it adds no fuel load. Full structural figures are in the table below, and Metal roof insulation in Australia shows where the spacer sits in the layer order.

Fire

Material Steel, non-combustible

The spacer itself does not add fuel load. Fire performance of the roof comes from the blanket and the sheet.

Fitting notes

Safety mesh and blanket go down first. Roof Razor then goes on over the purlin and, on the pre-loaded versions, is screwed down through its six fasteners, cutting through the blanket so it bears directly on the purlin. Fix the roof sheet to the spacer last. Sheet screws are not supplied. Before you start, check the purlin maker's dimensions for a full 50 mm flat surface, and check the pitch: Fletcher rates Roof Razor for roofs up to and including 30 degrees. Height comes from the blanket, not the pitch: 60 mm for 75 to 80 mm blanket, 85 mm for 100 to 120 mm and 115 mm for 130 to 145 mm. For timber battens there is a version without pre-loaded screws, in 85 and 115 mm. Fletcher recommends screws 62 mm long plus the penetration depth for the 85 mm, or 92 mm plus the penetration depth for the 115 mm, and asks for a structural engineer at design stage on any timber batten or truss job.
