Rhino Reinforced Foil Tape is THOR Building Products' scrim reinforced aluminium foil tape for vapour and moisture sealing of the joins in foil faced insulation. The backing is laminated polyethylene film, polyethylene fibre mesh and aluminium foil, with a pressure sensitive synthetic rubber/resin adhesive. Three widths, each 50 m long, sold by the roll.
What it is for
THOR list pipe thermal insulation, pipe sound lagging, foil faced HVAC duct insulation, foil faced under slab insulation and foil faced roofing blanket. Every lap on a blanket roof needs taping, and our guide to installing a roofing blanket explains why.
Which width
For pipe lagging, THOR's instructions call for reinforced foil tape at least 48 mm wide on every butt join, plus a band midway along each section to stop sagging. The 72 and 96 mm rolls put more tape either side of the join.
Strength, fire and temperature
Tensile strength is 100 N/25 mm with 25% elongation at break. Adhesion to steel is 20 N/25 mm. The adhesive carries flame retardant additives, and THOR's May 2020 safety data sheet gives AS 1530.3 indices of 0, 0, 0 and 0 to 1. The same sheet says it is not classified as flammable but can burn, so treat those as test results, not a fire rating. THOR's temperature range is minus 15 °C up to 65 °C. Use it only on surfaces inside that range.
Storage
Keep rolls in the original carton, preferably below 30 °C and out of direct sunlight. Full figures are in the table below.

Fitting notes
THOR's data sheet does not give an application method. Their Rhino Pipe Acoustic Lagging instructions recommend reinforced aluminium foil tape at least 48 mm wide on all butt joins: tape every longitudinal and circumferential join, and add a band of tape midway along each section so the lagging stays in close contact with the pipe and does not sag. Keep the tape to surfaces within THOR's stated temperature range of -15 °C up to 65 °C. Store the rolls in their original carton, preferably below 30 °C and away from direct sunlight.
Figures are taken from the THOR Building Products data sheet for Rhino Reinforced Foil Tape, product code RFT, June 2020, and THOR's safety data sheet for the same tape, May 2020. Roll sizes are from THOR's current product pages for RFT-48, RFT-72 and RFT-96. The manufacturer data sheet is linked above. THOR can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.
Common questions
What is this tape used for?
THOR list it for vapour and moisture sealing of the joins in pipe thermal insulation, pipe sound lagging, foil faced HVAC duct insulation, foil faced under slab insulation and foil faced roofing blanket.
What width do I need for pipe lagging?
THOR's Rhino Pipe Acoustic Lagging instructions call for reinforced aluminium foil tape at least 48 mm wide. Tape every longitudinal and circumferential butt join, and add a band midway along each section to stop the lagging sagging.
What temperature can it take?
THOR's data sheet gives a temperature range of minus 15 °C up to 65 °C. No separate application temperature is published, so keep it to surfaces that stay inside that range.
Is it fire rated?
The adhesive contains flame retardant additives, and THOR's May 2020 safety data sheet gives AS 1530.3 indices of 0 for ignitability, spread of flame and heat evolved, and 0 to 1 for smoke developed. The same sheet says the tape is not classified as flammable but can burn, so treat those as material test results, not a fire rating for the assembly.
How strong is it?
Tensile strength is 100 N/25 mm, elongation at break is 25% and adhesion to steel is 20 N/25 mm. THOR say the laminated foil and polyethylene mesh backing gives high strength along with flexibility and conformability.
Is the price per roll or per carton?
Per roll. Each roll is 50 m long, in 48, 72 or 96 mm width, with THOR product codes RFT-48, RFT-72 and RFT-96.
How should I store it?
In the original carton, preferably below 30 °C and away from direct sunlight. THOR's safety data sheet classes the tape as non hazardous and non dangerous.
