Rhino Metal Roofing RP-51MR is a heavy duty reflective roof sarking made by Thor Building Products for residential and commercial metal roofs. The foil is bonded to a reinforcing polymer mesh coloured blue to cut glare while it goes on.
Strength and fire
Thor rate it heavy duty: tensile strength at least 12.5 kN/m along the roll and 7.5 kN/m across, edge tear at least 80 N both ways. The flammability index is Low, below 5 to AS 1530.2. It suits BAL 12.5 to FZ under AS 3959 section 3.10, except exposed installations in fire control rooms or fire-isolated exits.
A vapour barrier, so ventilate in the cold
This is a Class 2 Vapour Barrier at 0.011 µg/N.s. Where daytime temperatures fall below 5 °C, Thor say the roof must be well ventilated and moist air from the house exhausted outside. Our article on metal roof condensation explains why.
What it adds thermally
The data sheet says up to R1.3 may be added to the insulation system in a roof. No roof build-up is given, so read it as an upper limit, not a rating for the foil. Thor recommend at least 20 mm of air space next to the foil face.
Ordering and site notes
Both rolls are 1350 mm wide: 30 m covers 40.5 m², 60 m covers 81 m². Install to AS/NZS 4200.2 with 40 mm of sag between trusses and expect up to 2% shrinkage. Sheet the roof as soon as possible and keep the rolls dry. Full figures are in the table below.

Barrier classifications
| Vapour classification | Class 2, Vapour Barrier |
|---|---|
| Vapour permeability | 0.011 µg/N.s |
| Water control classification | Water Barrier |
| Electrical conductivity | Conductive |
A vapour barrier stops moisture from the house passing through it, so in cold climates the roof space has to be ventilated instead.

| Tensile strength machine direction | min 12.5 kN/m |
| Tensile strength lateral direction | min 7.5 kN/m |
| Edge tear resistance machine direction | min 80 N |
| Edge tear resistance lateral direction | min 80 N |

Thor publish minimum strength values, not measured test results.

| BAL exception | Except in exposed installations in fire control rooms or fire-isolated exits (NCC 2019 Volume 1 Specification C1.10) |
| Fire hazard properties | Satisfies BCA Part 3.7.1 Fire Hazard Properties |
Thor's fire statements cite NCC 2019 clause numbers, so check them against the NCC edition that applies to your job.
Thermal
| Emittance | Reflective |
|---|---|
| Emittance of reflective face | max 0.05 |
| Added R-value in a roof (manufacturer statement) | Up to R1.3 may be added to the insulation system |
| Air space | Minimum 20 mm recommended next to the reflective foil face for maximum insulation value |
Thor give no roof build-up for the R1.3 figure, so treat it as an upper limit, not a rating for the foil.
Handling and limits of use
| Anti-glare face | Polymer mesh treated blue to reduce reflective glare when installing |
|---|---|
| Shrinkage | Up to 2% can be expected |
| Storage | Store in a dry area; weatherproof only after installation |
| Cladding | Install the external cladding as soon as possible |
| Concrete and mortar | No contact with wet concrete or mortar |
| Structures | For use in enclosed structures |
| Cold climates | Where daytime temperatures are below 5 °C the roof must be well ventilated and moist air from the dwelling exhausted outside |
Compliance
| Standard | AS 4200.1-2017 Pliable Building Membranes |
|---|---|
| BCA | Satisfies BCA specifications and requirements for Reflective Foil Laminates |
| Installation standard | AS/NZS 4200.2 |
Fitting notes
Install to AS/NZS 4200.2, the installation requirements for pliable building membranes. Thor recommend 40 mm of sag between trusses and at least 20 mm of air space next to the reflective foil face to get the full insulation value. Expect up to 2% shrinkage. Fit the roof sheeting as soon as possible after the sarking, keep the membrane away from wet concrete and mortar, and store the rolls in a dry area until they go on. Where daytime temperatures fall below 5 °C, the roof must be well ventilated and moist air from inside the dwelling exhausted outside.
Figures are taken from the Thor Building Products data sheet for Rhino Metal Roofing RP-51MR, dated July 2022. The manufacturer document is linked above. Thor Building Products can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.
Common questions
How much roof does one roll cover?
Both rolls are 1350 mm wide. The 30 m roll covers 40.5 m² and the 60 m roll covers 81 m². That is the gross roll area, so allow extra for laps and offcuts.
Is it a breathable sarking?
No. Thor classify it as a Class 2 Vapour Barrier with a vapour permeability of 0.011 µg/N.s, and as a Water Barrier. Where daytime temperatures fall below 5 °C, Thor require the roof to be well ventilated and moist air from inside the dwelling exhausted outside.
What R-value does it give?
Thor state that up to R1.3 may be added to the insulation system when it is installed in a roof. The sheet gives no roof build-up for that figure, and Thor recommend at least 20 mm of air space next to the foil face to reach its maximum value.
Can it be used in a bushfire prone area?
Thor state it is suitable for BAL 12.5 to FZ under AS 3959 section 3.10. The exception is exposed installations in fire control rooms or fire-isolated exits, which Thor reference to NCC 2019 Volume 1 Specification C1.10.
How much sag should I leave between trusses?
Thor recommend 40 mm of sag between trusses. Expect up to 2% shrinkage as well, and install to AS/NZS 4200.2.
How strong is it?
It is rated heavy duty. Tensile strength is at least 12.5 kN/m in the machine direction and 7.5 kN/m in the lateral direction, and edge tear resistance is at least 80 N both ways.
Can it be left exposed before the roof sheeting goes on?
Not for long. Thor say the external cladding should go on as soon as possible and that the membrane is weather proofed only after installation. It is for use in enclosed structures.
