R2.5 Fletcher Pink Batts Ceiling Insulation is a 130 mm glasswool batt from Fletcher Insulation for ceilings in new homes and retrofits. It is non-combustible to AS/NZS 1530.1 and rated BAL Low to Flame Zone under AS 3959.

Picking the width

Both sizes are 1160 mm long, 16 batts to a pack, in the two widths Fletcher makes for timber framed ceilings. Measure the frame first so the batts friction fit without cutting. R3.5 Pink Batts Ceiling gives a higher rating at 175 mm thick.

Pack area and coverage

The 430 mm pack holds 7.98 m² of batt and covers 8.86 m² of ceiling, because Fletcher allows for the framing. The 580 mm pack holds 10.76 m² and covers 11.95 m². Our labels and calculator use batt area, so they suggest slightly more packs than Fletcher's coverage method. Add about 5% for waste on a simple ceiling.

Keep the full 130 mm

Fletcher claims the R2.5 Material R-value only for a batt installed without compression. Let each batt recover after opening and never squeeze it into a shallow space. Keep it dry. It cannot act as a vapour or water barrier. What R-value goes where explains material and total R-values.

On site

Install to AS 3999. Leave at least 50 mm side clearance from downlights, exhaust fans and flues unless their maker says otherwise, and at least 20 mm below the sarking or roofing. Cut with a knife and straight edge, not power tools. Check the plasterboard weight limit first. Full figures are in the table below.

Early fire hazard indices tested to AS/NZS 1530.3.

Acoustic

Airflow resistance 2470 Rayls/m at 130 mm (ASTM C522)

Fletcher publishes no sound absorption test for this thickness.

Fitting notes

Install to AS 3999. Friction fit the batts between the ceiling joists and butt them closely so there are no gaps. Where the batts go in before the ceiling lining, run tape strapping at 90 degrees to the joists, three to four straps per batt, so they cannot fall. Carry the insulation at least 50 mm past the inside face of the external walls. Leave at least 50 mm side clearance from downlights, exhaust fans and flues unless the fitting's maker says otherwise, and at least 20 mm between the batts and the roof sarking or roofing. Let the batts recover to full thickness, do not compress them, and keep them dry. Cut with a sharp knife and a straight edge, never power tools.

Figures are taken from the Fletcher Insulation technical data sheet for Pink Batts Ceiling, RTDS9 Revision 7, 17 February 2025, with fitting guidance from installation guide IG06 Revision 5 and the CodeMark number from Fletcher's product page. The manufacturer document is linked above. Fletcher Insulation can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.

Common questions

Which width do I need, 430 or 580 mm?

Fletcher makes both widths for timber framed ceilings, each 1160 mm long. Measure the frame first so the batts friction fit between the joists without cutting.

How much ceiling does one pack cover?

Fletcher rates the 430 mm pack at 8.86 m² of ceiling and the 580 mm pack at 11.95 m², allowing for the area the framing takes up. The batt area in the packs is 7.98 m² and 10.76 m², which is the figure on our size labels.

How do I work out how many packs to order?

Fletcher's installation guide says to divide the area to be insulated by the coverage per pack. Allow about 5% for waste on simple areas and more on complex ones.

Will I still get R2.5 if the batts are squashed?

No. Fletcher states the batts must be installed without compression to keep the claimed R-value, and must fully recover before use.

Can I use it in a bushfire area?

Fletcher lists Pink Batts Ceiling as compliant with AS 3959 from BAL Low through to Flame Zone. It is also non-combustible to AS/NZS 1530.1.

What clearances do I need around downlights and under the roof?

Leave at least 50 mm side clearance from downlights, exhaust fans and flues unless the fitting's maker says otherwise, because cables and fittings covered by insulation can overheat. Keep at least 20 mm between the batts and the roof sarking or roofing.

Can the batts get wet, or act as a vapour barrier?

No. They must be kept dry before, during and after installation and cannot be used as a water or vapour barrier. Fletcher says they are not suitable where high humidity is present inside the building for long periods.

Does it help with noise?

Fletcher describes Pink Batts Ceiling as thermal and acoustic insulation and lists an airflow resistance of 2470 Rayls/m for the 130 mm batt. It publishes no sound absorption test for this thickness.
