Pyrotek Silentstep Premium is an 11 mm acoustic carpet underlay: a flexible mass-loaded barrier of 4 kg/m² fused onto high-density premium foam. It goes under carpet to cut footfall noise and airborne noise such as speech through a lightweight floor, and Pyrotek calls it ideal for second storey timber floors in homes.
What the barrier adds
Over timber joists, Pyrotek says, a standard underlay only reduces impact noise and does little for airborne sound. The mass layer takes on that second job. Tested on its own to ISO 15186-1 and ISO 10140-4, the underlay rates Rw 28 and STC 28.
Test results belong to the tested floor
Pyrotek's impact test (ISO 140-7:1998) was on a bare 18 mm timber floor. Laying Silentstep Premium over it took Ln,w from 92 to 56 and IIC from 18 to 54, and both changes mean less footfall noise below. Those figures describe that floor, not other constructions. Pyrotek advises getting your acoustic engineer's opinion on its data. Our article on acoustic and thermal insulation explains why a rating belongs to the whole build-up.
Roll and laying
One roll is 1350 mm x 5 m, covers 6.75 m² and weighs 34 kg. Lay it foam side down and barrier side up along standard carpet gripper, on a dry, clean, smooth and level floor. Butt the joins and tape every one with good quality underlay tape, because the smallest gap at any join costs performance. Flat timber subfloors need no bonding or stapling unless specified. Full figures are in the table below.

| IIC | 18 bare floor, 54 with Silentstep Premium |

A lower Ln,w and a higher IIC mean less footfall noise below, and the figures apply to the tested floor only.

This is the underlay alone, so the rating of a finished floor depends on the whole build-up.

Fitting notes
Start with a floor that is dry, clean, smooth and level, with old underlay, adhesive residue and nails removed. Fit standard carpet gripper, then roll the underlay out along the gripper edge, foam side down and barrier side up, leaving the gripper exposed. Cut it with a retractable utility knife as you would normal underlay. Butt the joins and tape every one with good quality underlay tape. Coverage must be continuous, because any gap at a joint or edge costs performance. On flat timber subfloors no bonding or stapling is needed unless specified. On ceramic tile subfloors, put contact adhesive on the corners to stop it moving. On stairs, staple it to timber or use contact adhesive on concrete. Then lay the carpet to its maker's directions.
Figures are taken from the Pyrotek technical data sheet for Silentstep Premium, 412IP, October 2025 (Oct-25-EN-412IP). Common questions
What does it do that normal underlay does not?
Pyrotek says a standard underlay over a lightweight timber floor reduces impact noise but does little for airborne noise. Silentstep Premium adds a 4 kg/m² mass-loaded barrier, so it cuts footfall noise and airborne noise such as speech, radio and television.
How much floor does one roll cover?
One roll is 1350 mm wide and 5 m long, which is 6.75 m². The joins are butted, not lapped, so allow for your cutting waste around the room rather than for overlaps.
Which way up does it go?
Foam side down, barrier side up. Pyrotek says the barrier side must face up for maximum performance.
What impact rating will my floor get?
Pyrotek's test over a bare 18 mm timber floor (ISO 140-7:1998) took Ln,w from 92 to 56 and IIC from 18 to 54. That is the result for the tested floor, not a rating for other constructions, so have your acoustic engineer assess your floor.
Do I need to glue or staple it down?
Not on flat timber subfloors, unless the job specifies it. Its own weight holds it in place while the carpet is fitted. On ceramic tiles, contact adhesive on the corners stops it moving, and on stairs it is stapled to timber or glued to concrete with contact adhesive.
How heavy is a roll?
The standard 1350 mm x 5 m roll weighs 34 kg. The underlay weighs 5 kg/m² in total, of which the barrier is 4 kg/m².
What about VOC emissions and mould?
According to Pyrotek, it complies with European and Australian standards for VOC emissions and is free from lead, odour-producing oils and bitumen. The foam is treated with Ultra-Fresh to resist mould, mildew, bacterial growth and dust mites.
