Kingspan AIR-CELL Insulbreak 90 is the 9.2 mm grade of Kingspan's Insulbreak range: a cross-linked closed-cell foam core between an anti-glare foil face and a plain foil face, rated R0.25 at 23 °C. Australian made, it is a thermal break, insulation and vapour barrier for steel-framed walls and metal roofs over battens.
Why 90 and not 70
Kingspan state that Insulbreak 70 and 90 deliver the R0.20 thermal break required for NCC compliance in steel-framed buildings. On a steel-framed wall under metal cladding, 90 is declared at RT 1.4 for heat flow in and out, against RT 1.3 for the 7.2 mm Insulbreak 70. That wall result is the only system figure published for 90.
Vapour barrier, so check the wall design
It is a Class 2 vapour barrier and is not suitable as a vapour permeable membrane in NCC climate zones 4 to 8, which take in Melbourne and Sydney. Have the designer check condensation first, or use the vapour-permeable AIR-CELL Permishield XV 70 on the wall. NSW varies the relevant NCC energy clauses, so confirm with the certifier there.
Roll and fixing
Each roll is 1350 mm x 22.25 m and covers 30 m². On walls, fix it loosely outside the studs, tape butt joins with 48 mm reinforced foil tape and add AIR-CELL Spacer Biscuits, about three per m², to hold an air space behind the cladding. Keep it 100 mm clear of flues and light fittings, and away from bare cables. Full figures are in the table below.

Fitting notes
Install to Kingspan's instructions and the applicable clauses of AS 3999:2015 and AS/NZS 4200.2:2017. On a steel-framed wall, fix it loosely to the outside of the frame so it can dish into the cavity, cut it neatly around doors and windows, butt join the sheets and tape them with 48 mm reinforced foil tape, then stick AIR-CELL Spacer Biscuits to the outer face at about three per m² before the cladding goes on. Kingspan do not recommend cladding thinner than 12 mm fixed directly against it. Over roof battens, lay it ridge to gutter across the battens with no more than 25 mm into the gutter and a nominal 40 mm sag between battens. Lap side joins 150 mm, or 50 mm when taped, lap untaped end joins 600 mm, and staple or tape it to the battens until the roofing is fixed. Keep the anti-glare face toward the installer, keep 100 mm clear of hot flues and light fittings, and keep the foil away from un-insulated cables. Store rolls on end in their packaging, clean and dry, and away from wet cement and lime.
Figures are taken from the Kingspan AIR-CELL Insulbreak Thermal Break Solution data sheet, KIAU0040 Issue 19, February 2025. Fitting, bushfire and air space notes come from Kingspan's AIR-CELL Insulbreak web page, handling notes from the AIR-CELL safety data sheet KIAU0063, the climate zone and NSW notes from Kingspan's certificate of conformity for the Insulbreak range, and the warranty from KIAU0226. The manufacturer document is linked above. Kingspan can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.
Common questions
Does Insulbreak 90 work as a thermal break on steel framing?
Yes. Kingspan state that Insulbreak 70 and 90 deliver the R0.20 thermal break required for NCC compliance in steel-framed buildings, and the material R-value of 90 is R0.25 at 23 °C. NSW has its own variations to the thermal break and building fabric clauses, so check the requirement with the certifier on NSW jobs.
What R-value do I actually get on a wall?
Kingspan declare RT 1.4 for heat flow in and RT 1.4 for heat flow out on a steel-framed wall with metal cladding. That figure is for Kingspan's wall detail, with AIR-CELL Spacer Biscuits holding an air space between the foil and the cladding. Kingspan publish no roof system figure for Insulbreak 90.
Can I use it as the wall membrane in Melbourne or Sydney?
Check with the designer first. It is a Class 2 vapour barrier and is not suitable as a vapour permeable membrane in NCC climate zones 4 to 8, which include Melbourne and Sydney. Kingspan's vapour-permeable thermal break for steel-framed walls is AIR-CELL Permishield XV 70.
How much does one roll cover?
One roll is 1350 mm x 22.25 m and covers 30 m². It is nominally 500 mm in diameter and weighs about 10 kg.
Do I need tape and spacer biscuits on a wall?
Yes. Kingspan call for butt joins taped with 48 mm reinforced foil tape and about three AIR-CELL Spacer Biscuits per m² on the outer face to form the air space behind the cladding. They do not recommend cladding thinner than 12 mm fixed directly against it.
Will two layers give a higher R-value?
No. Kingspan say each foil face must sit next to an unventilated air space, so doubling up the layers does not increase thermal performance.
Can it be used in a bushfire prone area?
Kingspan's FAQ for the AIR-CELL range says it is suitable for buildings in BAL 12.5 through 40. That statement covers the range and is not repeated in the Insulbreak data sheet, so confirm with Kingspan on a BAL-rated job.
