Kingspan AIR-CELL Insulbreak 70 is a 7.2 mm foil faced foam insulation, R0.20 at 23 °C, that Kingspan sell as insulation, thermal break and vapour barrier in one for steel-framed construction. One roll is 1350 mm x 22.25 m and covers 30 m².

Why the 70

Kingspan rate Insulbreak 70 and 90, not the 55, as meeting the R0.20 thermal break the NCC asks for in steel-framed buildings. For the 70, Kingspan declare RT 1.3 both ways in a steel-framed wall, and RT 1.9 heat in, RT 1.2 heat out on a battened metal roof with a raked ceiling. In NSW, clause J3D3 on thermal breaks does not apply. Our thermal break article explains the requirement.

Vapour barrier, so check the wall

It is a Class 2 vapour barrier, not suitable as a vapour permeable membrane in climate zones 4 to 8 under NCC 2022 F8D3(2). That takes in Melbourne and Sydney. On an external steel-framed wall there, have the designer check condensation risk, or use AIR-CELL Permishield XV 70, Kingspan's vapour permeable thermal break sarking.

On site

On a wall, fix it loosely to the outside of the studs, tape butt joins with 48 mm reinforced foil tape, and add AIR-CELL Spacer Biscuits, about three per m², before the cladding. Each foil face needs an unventilated air space, so doubling up adds nothing. Keep it off bare cables, as the foil conducts, and away from welding sparks: heat above 105 °C can damage it. Full figures are in the table below.

Kingspan · Fibre-free, physically cross-linked closed-cell polyethylene foam core with an anti-glare foil facing on one side and a plain foil facing on the other · Thermal break, insulation and vapour barrier for steel-framed walls and for metal roofs fixed to battens; also used in timber framed roofs application

Thermal

Material R-value R0.20 m²K/W at 23 °C (ASTM C518-2017)
Thermal break Kingspan state Insulbreak 70 and 90 deliver the R0.20 thermal break required for NCC compliance in steel-framed buildings
Reflectance Anti-glare face 95%, reflective face 97%
IR emittance (AS/NZS 4201.5:1994) Anti-glare face 0.05, reflective face 0.03
IR emittance category Category RR

Each foil face needs an unventilated air space next to it to perform, so a second layer does not raise the figure.

Declared total R-values

Steel-framed wall RT 1.3 heat flow in, RT 1.3 heat flow out
Metal roof with raked ceiling, 40 mm nominal reflective air space RT 1.9 heat flow in, RT 1.2 heat flow out

Calculated to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018 and NZS 4214:2006; dust on upward facing surfaces and a ventilated cavity both reduce the total.

Fire

Flammability index ≤5, Low (AS 1530.2:1993)
Combustibility Combustible (Kingspan AIR-CELL safety data sheet)
Heat limit Can be damaged by intense heat above 105 °C; avoid sparks and flame from blow torches, welders and cutting tools
Bushfire areas Kingspan state AIR-CELL is suitable for buildings in BAL 12.5 through 40

The BAL statement is a range-wide answer on Kingspan's AIR-CELL page, not a line on the Insulbreak data sheet, so confirm it with the designer for a BAL job.

Vapour and water

Vapour control Vapour Barrier, Class 2 (ASTM E96 Part B:2016)
Vapour permeable membrane use Not suitable in climate zones 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 (NCC 2022 F8D3(2))

Fitting notes

Install to AS 3999:2015 and AS/NZS 4200.2:2017. On a steel-framed wall, fix it loosely to the outside of the frame so it can dish into the wall cavity, cut it neatly around doors and windows, butt join the sheets and tape them with 48 mm reinforced foil tape, then stick AIR-CELL Spacer Biscuits to the outer face (about three per m²) before fixing the cladding. On a metal roof, lay it from ridge to gutter over and across the battens with a nominal 40 mm sag and no more than 25 mm into the gutter; lap side joins 150 mm, or 50 mm when taped, and lap end joins 600 mm if they are not taped. Keep the anti-glare face towards the installer, leave at least 100 mm around flues and light fittings, and keep the foil clear of un-insulated cables. Store rolls clean and dry in their packaging, stood on end, and away from wet cement and lime.

Figures are taken from the Kingspan AIR-CELL Insulbreak Thermal Break Solution data sheet, KIAU0040 Issue 19, February 2025, with the bushfire, cladding, air space and dust notes from Kingspan's AIR-CELL Insulbreak web page, the core material, handling and combustibility notes from the AIR-CELL safety data sheet KIAU0063, the warranty from Kingspan's AIR-CELL product warranty KIAU0226, and the climate zone, NSW and former name notes from Kingspan's 2023 certificate of conformity for Insulbreak (CM20029/1). The manufacturer document is linked above. Kingspan can change specifications without notice, so check the current sheet before specifying on a job.

Common questions

Does Insulbreak 70 meet the NCC R0.20 thermal break?

Kingspan state that in steel-framed buildings Insulbreak 70 and 90 deliver the R0.20 thermal break required for NCC compliance, and the 70 is R0.20 at 7.2 mm. In NSW the thermal break clause J3D3 does not apply, so check the NSW energy requirements for the job.

What is the difference between Insulbreak 55, 70 and 90?

Thickness and R-value: 55 is 5.5 mm and R0.15, 70 is 7.2 mm and R0.20, and 90 is 9.2 mm and R0.25. Only 70 and 90 are suitable as a thermal break. All three come in the same 1350 mm x 22.25 m roll covering 30 m².

Can I use it on an external steel-framed wall in Melbourne or Sydney?

It is a Class 2 vapour barrier and is not suitable as a vapour permeable membrane in climate zones 4 to 8 under NCC 2022 F8D3(2), which takes in both cities. Have the designer check condensation management first. Kingspan's vapour permeable thermal break sarking is AIR-CELL Permishield XV 70.

What R-value do I actually get?

The material itself is R0.20 at 23 °C. Kingspan declare RT 1.3 both ways in their steel-framed wall detail, and RT 1.9 heat in and RT 1.2 heat out on a metal roof with a raked ceiling over a 40 mm nominal reflective air space. Dust on upward facing surfaces and a ventilated cavity reduce those totals.

Will two layers double the R-value?

No. Kingspan say each foil face must sit against an unventilated air space, so doubling up the layers does not increase thermal performance.

Can wall cladding be fixed straight over it?

Kingspan do not recommend cladding under 12 mm fixed directly against AIR-CELL, because it can pillow and warp around the fixings. Their wall detail adds about three AIR-CELL Spacer Biscuits per m² to the outer face to hold the air space before the cladding goes on.

Can it be used in a bushfire prone area?

Kingspan state that AIR-CELL is suitable for buildings in BAL 12.5 through 40. That is a range-wide answer on Kingspan's AIR-CELL page rather than a line on the Insulbreak data sheet, so confirm it with the designer for a BAL job.

Is this the same product as Insulbreak 65?

Yes. The test reports listed for Insulbreak record Insulbreak 65 as renamed Insulbreak 70.
